Any recommendations for a shop in or near Rochester? Some friends have asked for advice on where to buy a couple of mountain bikes. Anything better than Evans in Maidstone? Thanks!

They could try Larkfield cycles. Had great service from them over the years.

Gravesend has two bike shops-Tri the Bike and Captiv Bikes

I've heard good things about Senacre Cycles in Maidstone too.

Depending upon bias/budget.... Don't forget Halfords and Go outdoors in Chatham too.

lol Halfords in Chatham... the only place that's ever tried to sell me handlebar tape as a replacement for rim tape, because they had no rim tape in stock.

Shame Geoff Wiles packed up, cos I'd have suggested that.

lol Halfords in Chatham…

You go there for the bike, not for the knowledge.

That said, I've had 2 bad experiences with Larkfield. One of which was due to lies rather than poor knowledge.

I'd rather poor knowledge than being lied to personally. Mind you, this did happen about 4 years back so perhaps they are better now. I hope so.

I second Captiv, Tri-bike & Larkfield and I'd add the Bike Warehouse in Gillingham High St too. it's a grim location though.

Mates use UK Cycles in Maidstone too.

Had great service from the guy who runs Cycle Hub Medway so well worth checking out.

Dean and Russ at Cycles UK in Maidstone have always been consistently good and a number of people I know use them with no issues at all.

Found the staff at Larkfield to be generally disinterested and unhelpful which is why its been several years since I went there so this may have changed.

UK cycles in Maidstone don't ever seem to have anything decent in stock, the best LBS for me is Biketart in Breach, below Canterbury. Loads of stuff in stock, small shop but big warehouse, shop rides too.

Evans in Maidstone is a good place for some stuff, picked up a fabric saddle there today.

I know Russ at Cycles UK from way back (he sold me a Specialized Enduro back in 2004!), we did ride together back in the day.

If your mate does choose Cycles UK then ask for Russ, he's really bloody good.

Lots of good suggestions, thank you!

I think they may end up buying a pair of entry-level bikes from Evans, reassured by the 30 Day Exchange guarantee.
