I took my bike in for a quick indexing check. I can do most things on my bike, but just dont seem to get the indexing perfect.

The mechanic stuck the bike on the stand, and in 2 minutes had everything running smoothly, then grabbed a can of some spray on lube and just sprayed a huge amount all over my chain and cassette. I had Squirt dry lube on, so had to degrease my chain and cassette when I got home to reapply.
I've had this before, and it's one of the many reasons I do most of my own spannering, even though I try support my LBS when I can. Why do this at all?

Don't forget to degrease your rotors too.

I use Squirt and tell my LBS this when I drop it in. He then makes a note.

It’s quite simple.

Probably an innocent mistake..thought he was doing a favour?
If you've got a more specialised lube and a 'chain maintenence' regime you're probably better off informing them before hand.

He'll see it as good service, as would I.

How do you expect him to know your lube regime?

I'm curious, if you can't index gears, what is the list of most things on your bike? fixing a puncture? 😆 attaching pedals?

How much do you pay for an "indexing" check? Cos if it's more than £2.50 I could have been a millionaire by now 😀 Why do so many people struggle with this? It's tension on a cable FFS!

I can never get indexing just right, no idea why, nor do I bleed brakes. I've done everything else including wheel building so thanks for the sarcastic responses. I also don't have a derailleur alignment tool, which is what I was asking if he could check, but he got it running fine without checking the hanger.

I would never just spray a huge amount of random lube on a chain without checking, especially not a bike in good condition that is clean and since the chain was running perfectly smoothly, probably already lubed.

I am in the "thats good service" camp. a badly lubed chain is a possible reason for the poor shifting.

If you had some specific thing that means you didn't want the chain lubing then you should have told the shop.

I would assume a chain lube as a part of sorting out poor shifting.

I think the simple answer is most people (certainly the ones I know) who don't do basic maintenance like indexing, don't tend to lube their bike meticulously either. So he took a punt as it looked dry and tried to do you a favour.

There could be other reasons, but unlikely any of them involve malice or gross negligence. So maybe just mention it next time you get your indexing checked 🙂

This

Personally i dont spray lube any customers bikes, but most customers who bring bikes into shops expect the chain oiled, the customers who run special lubes let me know.

If you were there and I was doing a gear tune and the chain looked dry I would have asked if you wanted the chain lubed.

Misplaced kindness rather than malice.

That's just a bit of surface rust. This is what rusty forks really look like.

He probably knew it was squirt and finds it as hopeless as I did.

Last time I had a service, they "told me off" for using too much lube. Which is probably right to be fair.

A previous LBS overlubed the chain during a service. I'd lubed in the weekend before and they just applied more over it. During the same service they'd managed to completely mess up a bike that only needed a slight tweak the the gears which took them 3 attempts to fix!

So, you watched him the whole time?

Was he so quick and efficient that he did this before you could shout "stop, I have my own lubing regime" or did you just smile and say nothing and cycle straight home to complain on the Internet?

In my opinion, if lubing is so important to you, you should have spoke up. At least next time you will know what to do.

Genuine question, what is it about squirt dry you like so much? Does it stop you getting chain ring marks on your calfs? I thought it was rubbish.
