You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Has anyone been on a guided mountain bike holiday with lavatrax? If so , what was it like?
We're looking for somewhere for a long warm sunny mountain biking weekend, and have done the usual suspects of switchbacks in bubion, spain, so fancied going somewhere different.
We like fast and technical'ish singletrack, with a bit (or a lot)of uplift and a bit of pedalling.
Welcome to be given other suggestions of destinations as well.
As far as I know they have a great rep, not used them though.
I think Tenerife is more XC / trail than uplifty - willing to be proved wrong. The MTB scene appeared to be relatively limited when I was there in 2010, but those trails I was able to find on my own were epic (in an XC / trail kind of way). Monsterous 1-2 hour long climbs too! And 45 minute downhills..
Thanks, from looking at their website I got the impression they might be a little more on the XC side than the downhill side.
We're not downhillers by a long stretch, but a nice mix of uplift and pedalling would be good. if we could get 10000feet of good quality down (ie not fireroads) , and pedal say 2000 feet of up in a day, that would be a decent mix.
I booked 2/3 days with them last year. Only did one as I messed by ankle up but, from the little riding I did, it was well worth it.
It's not DH at all (in that you wouldn't want a DH bike). We uplifted to a high point on the volcano and rode back to the beach. Good amount of mileage and overall descending (don't have the exact stats), some fire road but a good amount of natural single track.
I got the impression they have a lot of routes, some more climbing than others, others more technical, and they'll adjust to suit what you want.
J.
If you want DH then trust me Tenerife has it!
You have to remember that guys like Lavatrax (he's on here) have to cater to the lowest common denominator.
So unless the Athertons are popping over then it'll be the fat lad at the back who denotes the risk level.
I had 12 years there and you have to remember that the Caldera sits at 2800mts above sea level... and you can go all the way back down to the beach - you do the maths 😆
I've been with lavatrax and I highly recommend it. General jist is that you get uplifted to the highest point of the ride for that day and ride down with some fireroad pedalling and climbing in between. Some great long technical sections. I wouldn't really describe it as single track more wider rocky descents but mint all the same. Daz is a top fella.
You can get a bus from sea level to the top of Teide, a couple of thousand metres up, for under 10 Euro's, and they have space for bikes in the bottom of the bus. Not sure what the trails are like as we went walking up there, but I was very jealous of the people who got to ride back down. All the people using that bus had downhill-y kind of bikes, but they may have just been overbiked.
Even on a road bike it was stunning, you end up a thousand metres above the clouds and descend from a lunar type surface, through beautiful forests, all the way down to cheap beer on the beach.
Can't quite get to the top of Teidé by bus kbomb 😛
Ex FiL is a lifelong cyclist and ex-shop owner - he's done around the island, over the top, up, down, etc loads of times. It's a beast - theres a reason that athletes go there to train - the base of Teideé is at 2800mts and the air there is bloody thin - even a snowball fight can have you on your arse wondering why you're knackered.
If you're there during the rains - you'll see cars with snowmen on the bonnet driving back down - the prize goes to whoever has the biggest one left at the beach 😀
Thanks chaps, they sound decent, will drop them a mail and see if wr can be accomodated
Just to add a couple of us went in 2012. Darran (lavatrax) is a top bloke, has a great uplift van and knows the place really well. Rode some superb singletrack, quite a lot of fast loose fireroad, a whole load of volcanic scrub, etc. Amazing views as well.
We did one day 'XC' but mostly uplifted and then ride to the beach. We also stayed in a village a bit up the mountain away from the beach which was bloody lovely.
I will go back sometime. Unsurprisingly it's properly rocky. My fav route was 'pipeline' where you carry the bike for 20-30 mins over a water pipeline on a fairly narrow and steep track. More fun that it sounds 😉
Hi guys, this is Daz from that there Lavatrax. Thanks for the recommendations.
We do some XC stuff infrequently but the bread and butter is the Trail / AM or dare I call it Enduro type stuff. Best suited to a full susser with 140 to 160 travel.
Always uplifted to a point so that we break free of the urbanised areas, some start up on the edge of the national park at 2200m. Some a little lower and climb.
Climbing is generally a fireroad thing with the descents using some fireroads but diving off into good rocky single tracks where they are available. Its all very natural terrain, so not very much man made stuff going on. We have some north shore type stuff and some jumps now but only outside of the parque forestal which has protected status, hence no digging or building in there.
Any questions feel free to email - info @ lavatrax.com
I want to go back now!

Thanks Darren, you have an email from me with some date options etc.
Thanks for taking the time to jump on this thread.
Heh... I went guided only by openstreetmap, but I remember climbing over that pipe wondering whether I was going to end up back in the valley below!
We only went for a random cheap sunny holiday, but I'd love to go back for more now.
Me & the mrs did 6 days with Darran in Nov (hello Darran its Mick on the codeine) some great riding, building from reasonably technical to really testing stuff. We stayed in a cheap B&B up the hill and had a fantastic week. - highly recommended!
If I wasn't so full of the dreaded manflu (probably brought over by some pesky tourist) right now, I'd stick up some photos for you to drool over, but since I can barely focus on the screen I'll come back to that later.
Hi to Mick and Alex too!
