Hi All

Looking to get some larger volume tyres for my trail type hardtail. Lookikng for that holy grail of larger volume (2.4) with reasonable weight and decent grip for not much cash (ie 50 quid a tyre is just silly in my eyes). I do a mix of XC and trail riding. Really the bike encourages harder riding and I need to get a bit more volume in the tyres to stop whacking the rims off things so much. And yes, I am being 'careful' with my riding as reasonably achievable 🙂

I was looking at:

Bontrager SE4 29x2.4

One-One Chunky Monkey 29x2.4#

The bike has plenty of clearance (boost front and rear, can take 'plus' setup)

But just wondered if anyone had any alternatives to the above they might suggest?

Cheers in advance!!

🙂

That's it for cheaper tyres at the moment.

Going up a price notch is the maxxis stuff (DHR/DHF), then up again is schwalbe ( any of their 2.35s are pretty much everyone else's 2.4s.)

New WTB stuff is coming, but I'm advised by the UK distributor that there months of yet.

Michelin Wild Enduro are under £40 and well regarded.

The Hutchinson Toro RR is a bit narrower but quite high volume as well and excellent all round if a bit heavy.

MSC Grippers - great tyres for the money and a bargain at the moment until they get more popular.  http://www.mscbikes.com/componentes&s=articulo?codart=GRI29230TLR2CA . The 2.3 comes up like some 2.5s, and the 2.4 is more like a 2.6-8 (or at least the 27.5 version is, I've not seen a 2.4 29er on a rim).

If you're in the Inverurie area (long shot I know) my buddy Clark at Bennachie Bike Bothy probably has some... other dealers are also out there of course 😉 just helping out a mate 🙂

Geax (Vittoria) goma? That's a big 2.4. I've got one you can try for cheap

I have used a 26" Chunky Monkey before and it correlated with me crashing a few times. I think it needs a wide-ish rim (which I didnt have) to get the edge grip. All the crashes were the front washing out.

It's probably fine on a wider rim

I saw the MSC advertised but couldn't find a UK dealer online.

New Hans Dampf surely in with a shout. Mate just put some on his hardtail (Bfe) - apparently has taken the sting out.

The se4 is a superb tyre. I have a 2.3 I think and love it. Think its an ideal size

2.4 conti x-kings are  £15 on On-one.

https://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/TYCONXK29/continental-x-king-29-folding-tyre

not massively chunky, but they grip well enough.  nice mix of grip and speed.  Worth a pop for £15, anyway!

Bonty SE$ is pretty hard to beat at that money. Chunky monkey is OK but agree about front end washing out - had a couple of surprises when running mine!
