I'm sure I looked at lakesmtb site the other day and there were some new routes posted  including one that takes in Jenkins crag and Wansfell pike. Just looked at the site and the new routes have gone.

I was hoping to do this route on Thursday, has it been taken down coz it's a bit cheeky? Or was it actually on a different website in the first place!?

Anyway, is Wansfell pike fair game on a thursday in October, or am I asking for trouble!?

Well if it's got footpaths then it's cheeky!

as for the second part that is probably a question not for a public forum

It's a FP but there are paths going up and over. Devils Stair case is erm hellish. There is a way down off the saddl,e that works it's way back to Jenkins but is a route to be shown as it is a bit tricky.

I was going to go up from Ambleside (looks steep, expecting to carry!) Then straight over and down to troutbeck (nanny lane)

I ride staveley/kentmere quite a lot when I get a day out so was looking forward to something I've not done before!

Going up the northern side from Ambleside up Devils Staircase is tough. I think I'd rather go up Jenkins Crag and Hundreds Lane and turn round!

Nanny Lane has a hostile farm at the bottom - stealth mode from he zig zag hairpin.

Richard's route is good if you can pick your way across and down to Skelghyll

Nice. What's the 'alternative' way down Jenkins Crag like?

I wish I had the luxury of being able to pop over there midweek. Probably not going to brazen it out on a weekend in October.

If you take the route down on Richards route I doubt you will have any problems. I did it last year and only saw two people climbing up it.

The problem with Websites such as LakesMTB is they cant be seen to be publishing cheeky routes. Sure all their pics are cheeky, but they never name the location.

Yeah I get that,  I think they chanced it a few weeks ago then,  there was a few new tires in there,  but now they've disappeared!

If navigation is a bit tricky to do Rich's route,  I think I might stick to what I know,  maybe iron Keld for now

Having followed a Lowey route recommendation a few years ago whilst up there on holiday, and it being a brilliant ride, i'm going to suggest you go for it!

So up from troutbeck, get to the summit, then what!? There's no path on the OS map and I can't see anything on Google maps! Is it visible when up there!?

Look at Rich's strava, you can follow his decent. I got a bit lost on the top bit but soon found the way down. Nice singletrack descent all the way to the woods.

If your starting in Ambleside you could tie it in with a loop over Loughrigg too. Or do the route I did which included Garburn.

That looks like what I had in mind, was going to start from Ings. I'll give it a go, unless the weather is awful!!

Well I did it!

It was pretty horrendous up there, near zero visibility. Thought I'd cracked the off the map descent, but realised i'd gone horribly wrong a couple of times so ended up climbing back up a couple of times!

Cracked it in the end. Would like to do it again on a clear day now I know what I'm doing and incorporate it into a longer ride.

Why did you not go to the top of Wansfell ?beats the grassy traverse around to the trail

And going up Nanny Lane the Hundreds Rd climb is fully rideable up to wansfell well done on a pretty shitty day for it

I'll bear that advice in mind for next time.  I just happened to spot the start of "grassy traverse" and figured it must be the way to go given people above said navigation could be tricky. Given how horrible it was I wasn't too arsed about making the summit,  but I got lost twice on the way down and did alot of p1ssing about!

The first wrong track I took felt like it would make a pretty good descent though,  you can see how far I got on my strava, the bit with the really straight line (I forgot to unpause!) It's not a strava segment so I don't know if it goes anywhere?

we always go up nanny lane, its steep but easily rideable untill past where it meets hundreds rd. most direct route up from that end of troutbeck.

due to lack of use it is quite easy to loose the path on the descent when visibility is bad, we do it quite often and recently had a few "where's the path go" moments on a murky night.

PR if he demonstrates the former while carrying the latter, he'll lose his licence.

lads i ride with have been using nanny lane for years and never had a problem with him, apparently it used to be a really good rough descent untill just before i started riding.
