Heading up to the Lakes for a couple of days.

One of the planned ride is to the Borrowdale Bash, but to tag on Esk Hause/Styhead.

Original plan was to push/carry up Grains Gill to end up a bit NW of Esk Hause itself, but looking at the map I can get the full descent if I go along Langstrath, then fork right up to Allencrags Gill. Looks mostly fairly flat (by Lakes standards), with a big kick at the end.

Anyone done it? How rideable? Not bothered by proper hike-a-bike, but I'd rather not miles of tramping through flat(ish), unrideable knee deep bog. (I've done Stake Pass, so know the path that far)

Thanks!

There was a thread on this issue last week. I think the consensus was to go up Stake until the FP junction marked 'pile of stones' turn west and head up the E side of angletarn gill.

Not considered cutting the corner and going up Allencrags Gill. Looks more like scrambling territory from the aerial view. Don't know why you'd favour that even over the FP on the W side of Angletarn Gill.

Walked up Grains once. Wouldn't want to take a bike up it.

Hmm...Allen Crags Gill from the head of Langstrath.

Not seeing much hike-a-bike fun up there. 🙂

Stake pass is an easy push- feels almost like cheating! Definitely better than up the Gill with a bike.

Thread from last week below. We did it at the weekend and from Pile of Stones the path very clearly splits to head down Stakes or up towards the crags. The path up to the crags is clear until you go over a crest and it levels out. There were a couple of very short boggy sections given the dry spell we've had and it does peter out but if you contour at Littlegill Head rather than head up you'll see the path reforming below you. The majority of it is ridable at the moment so worth doing. Still a fair bit of carry beyond Angle Tarn and Bash + Styhead is a pretty big undertaking. The consensus for Langstrath is it's best on the right hand side (river's left bank) as you're heading up (go past the campsite) and it was steady with the odd push section but generally fun.
