Thanks for the help in my Scotland thread, that part of the trip is now pretty much booked. we'll be staying in Peebles and Laggan.

Now if you had 1 day in the Lakes and 1 day in the Peaks what would you ride in each? and where would you base yourself to do so? The day in the Peaks will be after 8 days of riding so nothing too optimistic! Other than that just after some quality natural riding, something easyish to follow as we don't want to spend the day lost either!

Peaks? Hope, Castleton maybe. Depends what you want from your few day.

Lakes, if first time, Borrowdale Bash morning, lunch in Keswick, Back of Skiddaw or skiddaw summit/ullock pike in the afternoon would be a good intro. Based from keswick which is 20 mins from m6 and has all amenities.

For Peak: Stay at Ladybower Inn and do a loop from there?

I've never stayed there myself but always thought it'd be great to roll early out of there, do an all day ride and then have a huge pub dinner and a few beers later on.

Lakes - depends on weather and your legs. If it's good, 3 passes from Staveley perhaps or a big Grizedale/Seathwaite/Walna Scar combo.

Other Lakes options:

Coniston loop: Conistion in to Grizedale Forest, Parkamoor, Blawith Common, Stephenson Ground, Walna Scar, Coniston. (on the pedalnorth site)

Ambleside loop: Ambleside over side of Loughrigg, Elterwater, Little Langdale, Hodge Close, Tarn Hows, Tilberthwaite, Little Langdale, Elterwater over to Rydal and back to Ambleside. Lots of variations on this one, can be ridden in either direction. Could go on to Claife Heights before cutting back towards Tarn Hows.

Nan Bield: Staveley, Green Quarter, Sadgill, Gatesgarth, Haweswater, Nan Bield Pass, Kentmere Hall, Three rivers descent.

The blrrowdale bash is pretty boring. It seems a shame to go to the lakes and not do a mountain like Helvellyn. My take on Nan Beild, which is a great trail, would be over it south to north to Haweswater then back over north to south- it gives you the supremely technical northern descent and saves you descending on Gatesgarth which is just a land rover track.

As for the Peak, a standard easy loop would be Hagg Farm, Lockerbrook Descent then up to Whinstone Lee Tor. That is fun but not hard on the legs.
