I'm going, taking the caravan up for the week like I did for the Jennride, have you got the pub list for the route Rich, though I'm looking forward to cow pie at the George Hotel afterwards.

Any of you fine specimens riding it on a HT?

Fancy it with a carbon 29er as it's the only tool I have.

I'll be using my trusty 26" Cotic Rocket only bike I've got, though I might regret it if the Website map route of the start is correct as it goes up round Lattrig to Threlkeld, but the route on the GPS file shows it going on the coast to coast road route past the stone circle to Threlkeld and I hope it's this that's correct.

There's an old road goes through Brundholme Woods to Threlkeld - mostly tarmac.

Ah, spooney green lane. That'll get the pipes cleaned for peoples.

Will be a bit of a stramash everyone bottlenecking up there, a lot pushing, throw in jolly ramblers going up and down and it all adds up to a perfect Lakeland cocktail.

Just checked the routes for the Full Massif, the web page and GPX agree and go up round Lattrigg, its the Mini Massif that the differences occur.

i'm doing it on my stigmata again... the perfect bike for about 90% of it, from memory

last year i did it on schwalbe g-ones, but i was pushing my luck on some of the wetter/muddier sections, this year i'll be on maxxis mud wrestlers

I'm in. Ideal preparation for me - out for a few beers while watching the footie in Manchester, evening train upto Penrith, pedal over to somewhere around Keswick and bivi in some woods. Should be reet. I'll be the slightly sick looking fat bloke on the green 29er with rigid carbon forks, full guards and a pannier rack.

I could be up for a beer or two and the first part of the ride (domestic stuff in the afternoon). The route passes us - very wet at the moment and looking like there could be flooding again.
Here's the road you use, this morning:
[img]IMG_2433 by Andy Williamson, on Flickr[/img]

Due to get drier towards the weekend though and it drains quickly, leaving the roads nice and clean. Wish I had time for the whole thing, it's a nice route.

Trust me to have just replaced light Schwalbe MTB tyres with ultra sticky but heavier high roller 2's. Going to be a grip fest on the tarmac bits but may be grateful for them on the looser bits, especially given the amount of rain this last few days

I fancy this. I am up in Grasmere from Monday, but I suppose I could have a couple of nights in Keswick prior.

you still need someone for entry Rich?

The grass descent from Setters to cockermouth might be entertaining for spectators.

Ton - unless the tourer can handle proper off road, take the Solaris. Ideal bike is something between a disc braked CX on 40mm tyres and an XC racy MTB.

I did it last year on an old 26 hardtail with 1.75 tyres. I’m on holiday in Keswick again this year so entered again but the wet autumn and deluge to come is putting me off. My hardtail has gone, i was going to use my “converted” Triban 540 road bike - long drop brakes allow 35mm cx tyres with comfortable clearance, and I fitted mtb derailleur so have a low gear of 34-36. But I’m a roadie with limited off road experience, and concerned it will be too wet and muddy for me.

There are only a coupl of muddy bits tbh - the section from Bassenthwaite towards Cockermouth won't be buff.

Probably the best CXer based XC route for a whole load of riding in a stunning area.

Loved doing it, can’t make this weekend (because I forgot about it basically)

Hope y’all enjoy it.

Last year I did it on a Cotic X with 35mm cyclocross tyres. Two pals who I rode with were on XC hardtails. The cyclocross bike was definitely the one to be one for 90% of the ride. It was a bit sketchy on the grassy descents but that added to the fun. I must admit that I'm slightly nervous about it this year given the rain that we have had...but I cant help but think that it would be dull and draggy on a MTB. I'll probably be the one face down in a bog with a green Cotic X somewhere near!

2nd time for me, doing it on the Focus Mares again.
This time it's got Woodchippers and G-ones on. It's a much better bike for it too.

Aazlad- yes, that was my conclusion from last year, cx bike ideal given majority of terrain. Mind you I found my hardtail sketchy on the descents, I came off after losing the front wheel on the descent down to cockermouth. Was sporting land cruiser tyres, have gone with conti cyclo x kings for the converted road bike this year. Still in two minds about it, will see how things look on Saturday when I’m down.

Caravan site at Keswick closed due to flooding, got a place at Staveley site, now working out the logistics of still riding and keeping the family happy as I've been reminded it's their holiday too, a pre ride drink looks unlikely now.

brennan - there's loads to do in Keswick - great play park, pool and small museum near the event start, The Puzzling Place in town is good, King Kong Climbing wall good for all ages, BMX pump track near event start...

Was down for the 60 miler.

I wonder if we will be grateful for the reduction! Saying that, looking a bit drier for Sunday but damage will be done to the terrain.

Looking forward to it. Heading down tomorrow afternoon and spending the night in the van. May stay over Sunday night and take in some fells on the Monday. Happy days. Love the lakes.

Considering heading down tomorrow night rather than Sunday morning. Anyone suggest a good location for hammock?

weather has been ok today not sure why they are shortening the route planning a 100 miler incorporating the route . default place to van camp is behind the pencil museum but not easy on the eye might camp just past Threkeld just past the outdoor centre!

The bit taken out is mostly tarmac too. Presumably taking slow conditions into account.

Rossa, head passed the two Castlerigg campsites on the minor road and continue on this (very narrow road) passed the farm and the road ends. There are woods around this quiet area I am sure you could hammock.

Thanks @muzz. I ended up staying just outside Ambleside at Low Wray. You can also hire their hammocks if anyone fancy trying it!

Just got back I basically followed the GPS download and rode all the bits they diverted people away from they were pretty sodden, except Latrigg which was fine and a blast. Out of Cockermouth I headed up Whinlatter Pass for a baked potato as I was running on empty. Did a loop of the lake to stretch my legs did not do the planned 100 miles 🙁

The journey back on the M6 killed any enjoyment I got from the ride! Offroad sections were fun but too much on roads for my liking really.

On the bits they rerouted it was very heavy going and the trails would have been trashed can see why they changed them as they will obviously want to run it next year and it does not go down well with the locals if the trails are trashed. Not sure why they never took the route up Latrigg as it was dry as!
