HI All,
I am setting off to the Italian lakes tomorrow and am lucky enough to take the bike with me.
I have been looking around for some trail maps on the webm but cant find anything!
I have done a day going down 601, but want to see what the trail options are for the descent from the cable car and around Malcesine where we are staying.
Anybody got any pointers to share?
Cheers
Alastair
Most of the commercial maps show bike routes on them for that area. I've ridden up the road to Malcesine, and taken a trail all the way back to Garda, but would be hard pressed to describe when to find it. The other option is the bike shops, all have trail maps, and most will put a GPX file on your gps if you have one?
Enjoy the trip, post pics when you return!
gardamtb website has lots of routes with maps
was down on the lake last month... what bike are you taking? even with my 160 forked Alpine I was tiring on some of the descents... so freaking rocky and no let up. there arte better places to visit, but.....
.... take the Ponale up to Ledro, up around the back to above the town I can't remember (think out begins with "L" and is on the shore) and head around the hill till you reach a pass, Bocha or Bocca I think.. the trail you want is 422 above Pregesina. ride that down and then push up to another pass for the 428. finish with the Ponale back to Riva.
the best map I have found so far is the local tourist info map. you can pick it up for a few €€ in the tourist office.
Oh, and check GPS-tour.info
I am taking my Orange 5, so might struggle!
Last time I hired a bike, only about 100mm suspension and brakes the wrong way around was a recipie for disaster............so I fell off 3 times and did myself a nasty knee gash!
Will look at the above suggestions, thanks!
Call Luca at http://www.bikeshuttletorbole.com
I've just got back from a week riding in the area.
Luca is a top guy and offers a shuttle service every morning from outside Carpentari bike shop in Torbole.
Top of 601 is now ridable again with only a couple of small snowdrifts left near the summit of Altisimo. The bottom section of 601 has got to be my favourite bit of trail on the plannet. Loved it so much that some of us went back to do it again the following day in the rain!
Ponale direct descent to the lake from Pregasina is good too.
Also ask Luca about Serpente (Anaconda), San Pietro (401) and absolutely loads of stuff off the Monte Baldo road, inc No 6 to Navenne, Skull, Coast, Traole.
Orange 5 is perfectly capable for the job. On my previous visit I took a 140 trail bike and enjoyed it on that but took the Patriot this time and it was in it's element. The whole area is one big rocky, techy paradise.

Took my Pitch with 160's on it - fine, but was working very, very hard on some of the trails (down), loose, steep, rocky, rubble was awesome... 😯
orange 5 would be perfect imo, there's lots of big climbs, any bigger bike would be a pain imo (unless you intend to just use shuttles/malcisine chairlift).
I used a 456 carbon with 140mm forks and rode everything that was put in my way (including The Skull), tough in places tho, a bit of resting on some descents and not as fast on some rocky sections as a full sus would be, but didn't spoil the fun.
got the cable car up from malcesine myself (check before, they only let bikes on at certain times)
there were some routes but v poorly signed, ended up appearing in someone's back garden at one point 🙂
Had a great time in the Italian lakes.
The best day was when I took the funivia up to Monte Baldo, then carried on up to the top of Altissima.
Lots of snow at the top, lots of fun at the bottom.
Very rocky and technical riding.............great fun!
Thanks for the suggestions, will look out for skull / anaconda next time.
