Can anyone recommend a 20-30 km route with <900 m of climbing in the Lakes based on the following criteria?
Not around Ambleside (loughrigg/iron keld/garburn) or grizedale.
Decent options for the wife to walk the dog for 2-3 h.
Not likely to be stupidly busy in the middle of the day on a Saturday.
Ideally not Walna scar (my fitness is rubbish and the climb may kill me) or borrowdale bash, though I may end up doing one of those if i can't think of anything else!
I left my VB guide book at home or I'd consult that!
There are a couple of different routes to the south of Walna Scar, in the Vertebrate book and also the Tom Hutton book. Both called Blawith something, I think. If no-one comes up with a better suggestion, I can send you the gpx files.
Something from Staveley maybe? A loop of Garburn pass from the west plus a couple of other descents (three rivers/HP plantation) would probably fit your criteria.
I'd agree with Martin and Richard. Good route that.
Or further east, Cockpit to Howtown is great ( easy but great) and Ullswater bridleway: https://strava.app.link/lDLN9vGalqb
Thanks, Garburn might work, can maybe send the missus to Troutbeck and back with the dug!
Maybe one of the loops involving the Ulswater path, Beda Fell?. Park in Glenridding for the missus to find plenty options. We didn't find Saturday too busy along the path last time we did it (Sundays might be different).

Not sure if it is too close to Ambleside for you but maybe dotting around Claife? Other option could be some of the riding to the south of Ings.

Unless I'm much mistaken, that is exactly the loop I linked to 🙂

I absolutely love the Ullswater Bridleway.
I was going to suggest Claife
Dunno if this'll work
or try this (you don't have to go to the Co_op in Hawkshead though 🙂 )

@thegeneralist Apologies, I'm yet to join Strava (or actually measure anything on a route) 🙂
I'd discounted Claife based on the following:
Not around Ambleside ... or grizedale.
vmgscott. I was just trying to let the OP know we were in agreement he should go there. 2 votes for the same route, gotta count for something. 🙂
Was the bracken up on the descent to Martindale? Keep meaning to go back when it's less bushy.
Thanks both, the Ullswater route sounds perfect - easy is good at the moment, my fitness/skill is rubbish after a winter/spring of constant colds, plus I've never done it before so that's another big tick! If fitness becomes an issue it looks like it's easy enough to bail out along one of the earlier paths rather than going all the way to the NE of the lake, is that the case? And would I be missing out on some good trails if I do?
A bit of a drive is also good as we're changing over between accommodations in Ambleside and Hawkshead and have 6 hours to be out for.

I do like Claife but I'll probably be over there next week as we're staying in Hawkshead.
Thanks again for the advice, I did https://strava.app.link/7iv8q2Tiqq b">this ride yesterday and it was great - the last bit where there's a lot of up and down and some tech climbing nearly defeated me though as I was pretty knackered by that point! It was busy with walkers anyway though, so would have been tough to get up some bits regardless.
Can't get that link to work, can you double check.
My original response was poorly worded. I implied that both C to H and Ullswater Bridleway are easy. UB is in fact absolute nails, and all the better for it. Sounds like you may have gone that way? It's great if you've got your zone on, but still well techie.
Great that you had a good time 🙂
Ah, should have checked the link, hopefully this is better! The ride was great and the UB descents were good fun, the little climby bits were just a bit too much for my knackered legs. Which was annoying, as they mostly looked doable if I was at full fitness (apart from some of the steps)!
Excellent. And even more so since you did the good western Bridleway at the South end of the lake, rather than the shit parallel one just to the east which was in my linked route ( thought I'd try it that time, never again :-))
In the unlikely event someone digs up this thread, follow ebennet's route not mine.
