I'm pretty familiar with riding in the lakes over many years and have ridden with bogtrotters for the last 10 years. Most of the riders I used to go our with have either stopped riding or don't get out regularly and boggies are more a social club these days.
I typically ride on a Sunday 20-25 miles, 4,000-5,000ft climbing and quite technical with hike-a-bike being quite common. Usually start riding 10.00AM finishing 4.00-5.00PM moderate pace. Typical rides would be Helvellyn, Ullock Pike, Ill Bell, Nan Bield, Garburn, Whiteless Pike, Borrowdale Bash with extension, Grizedale natural stuff etc.
So was looking for others albeit mates, shop rides, club rides who I can tag along with.
I'm based in Wigan area so visit Peaks, Snowdon, Calderdale, Wharncliffe etc.
I'm a relatively old codger of 53 but fairly fit currently riding a Nukeproof Mega 290 and like anything technical.
Anybody know of anything going on I could join up with?
Hmmmm yes. In need to get out in the lakes more, but very infrequent and unreliable.
I'll message when I go.
I try and get up regularly I'm only in horwich
Any other people out there doing any riding in the lakes on Sundays?
Me but I like big mileage people up here tend to only do 15 miles and thats it 🙂
Harsh rich but not far off....
To be fair, some 15 mile routes in the lakes can take most of the day
Keswick Mountain bikes do a Sunday shop ride. It's on their Facebook page.
I’m a relatively old codger of 53 but fairly fit currently riding a Nukeproof Mega 290 and like anything technical.
Most of the rides you smash out mate would have me begging for mercy halfway round. I try and ride up there a bit but I'm nowhere near your level.
Lot of the Keswick lot ride both Saturdays and Sundays regularly. Try them... Gav, Clare, Bunny, Max. Join the KTNR facebook group and ask around.
I know that only too well, I ridden with you many times before Richard and your not getting me involved with bikepacking 🙂 Thanks for the info Lowey, I know you too but only through FB and Insta, I'll make some enquiries with the Keswick lot but got the impression they don't tend to do full day rides
Just had a look on Keswick bikes FB page and their rides tend to be 3 hours on a Sunday which isn't really enough. Takes me 3 1/2 round trip to Keswick and my motto is to ride for longer than I drive. Was looking for around 6 hours on the fells.
I pootle most weekends in S Lakes.... 56 fittish... contact me if you fancy a ride..
I'm just plain jealous of anyone with 6 hours free on a Sunday!
As for Rich and his epics, thats just ridiculous! Although his Jennride has inspired me to try the Moors100 this year.
Cheers gkeeffe, may just do that, do you do higher level riding from Staveley e.g. Garburn, Ill Bell, Nan Bield etc?
As far as time availability is concerned I have been riding mountain bikes for years and have an understanding wife who has had many years of my disappearance mainly on Sunday to pursue my passion in life.
Not 100% sure if you can mention Fb groups on here but does seem to be what the op is asking, most riding groups or clubs use FB rather than the likes of forums these days.
I’ve pretty recently stumbled across singletrack scene FB group, weekly big group rides and lots of splinter cells. Such as myself organising rides around Calderdale, peaks and as your request a lot around the lakes,
Mods delete if not appropriate.
Cheers kirky just sent a request to join, sounds interesting may just fit the bill
Wish I was at the right level to ride with you more often mate. I see your Strava every Sunday and wonder where you get the energy! I get a mental block when I see the elevation. The techy stuff I'll have (mostly) a go at, but always worried I'd end up bailing towards the end. Agree with the club becoming a social club, shame it's gone that way.
No worries, all my rides tend to be around 3500/4000ft maybe more in summer as I make loops a bit longer but I struggle to keep up with a few of the FB group. gaz t who rides the lakes almost every other weekend is a bit of a machine and enjoys getting the elevation in along with good descents.
I’ll look out for you on there.
So I found the group and joined up also connected to the extreme rides garmin group. I'll make a few postings and meet up with you guys somewhere sometime. I'm out pretty much every weekend 😃. Wouldn't worry about bailing Colin, it does happen but as you know we always wait for the slowest rider. If your somewhere near being able to do the loop it shouldn't be a problem but if you feel like your miles away it would probably not be enjoyable.
Me and another lad ride lake regular. On the odd occasion manage to drag a couple of other with us.
Your welcome to meet up with us. We have done all the rides you mention and loads more...the main aim is to find the techy stuff as opposed to the fast flat out stuff.
Example being last sunday we parked near greizdale and did 2 natural bits before heading over and round back of coniston mines for a decent. Then back over greizdale.
22miles 3700ft that on a cold frosty day was enough.
Usually a bit bigger in summer.
We like searching for new stuff. Hike a bike is a necessity.
Send me some details and I'll let you know when we are going next time
Cheers santascurse, I think I'll take you up on that. Did Elterwater last Sunday over Lingmoor cheeky, across to Iron Keld and a bit of other stuff round the mines and finished on Clappersgate. 3,600ft and 20 miles. Usually do a bit more but the guy I was riding with had to be back in Preston for 4.00PM and it was a pretty grim day so I had no complaints 🙂
Hi 26... up for a ride sometime... keep in touch!
I'm trying to get out more regularly Martin and your rides always look good if a little light on pub stops. If you bang up an idea on Thuesday I'll try and make it.
Been away this week Tom and only just seen your message I'm at Wharncliffe tomorrow with boggies as Sunday looks a write off due to the weather. Getting bored with riding on my own which I did many times in the last few years and last year in particular and anticipate many more this year. Cheers for the shout out gkeeffe, was in the lakes today doing Borrowdale Bash and will be returning probably next weekend. Usually ride Sunday unless the weather is as this weekend and then am able to switch my riding day.
Hey Martin, riding out of Hartsop next weekend with a work buddy. Probably not long enough for you in km and m but plenty of tech.
Bookmarking this in case I get a pass out later this year. Really keen on doing some proper long lakes rides.
