Thinking of a few socially distanced days in the Lakes.

Can anyone recommend inexpensive accommodation with bike storage - preferably near a pub and with riding straight out of the door (although not a deal breaker) and also a decent guide for some of the natural stuff?

Thanks 😊

YHA at Hawkshead do camping pods. Judging how busy it was this weekend in the South Lakes, finding some availability might be the challenge.

I just booked a room yha Grasmere for a night next week so they do exist but you might need to juggle dates, Travelodge Kendal has lots of rooms though a bit out of the way.

Just had a couple of days staying at Elterwater independent hostel with mrs and kids, didn’t seem too busy, Britannia Inn almost next door too.
Langdale yha might also be an option.

Staying in a cottage in Coniston at the end of September, quiet and quaint village.
Also looking for riding recommendations outwith the trail centres in the area

Which Coniston is that, then? 🙂 Not sure I recognise it from that description!

There's stacks of good riding in all directions. If you specify what kind of stuff you like, people will recommend various.

I'm open to suggestion, but would like some natural riding with fantastic views.

And possibly a trail centre for when we arrive and don't have to think too hard.

The cottage is up Thurston view way, so quite far from the town to be fair.
(Apologies for hijacking the thread mccraque) We are regular Tweed valley riders so awesome views and good descents.

We did Helvellyn last summer, shame it was raining sideways with low cloud

Take a look at Satterthwaite or Hawkshead, with easy access to Grizedale for trails. I think the Eagles Head is open at SW and plenty of pub options in HH.

My house in 12-24 months....but until then try Coal Yeat cottages above Lowick. Walkable to pubs in spark bridge, very bike friendly, trails into grizedale, Blawith common and coniston (little bit of road)

Full suss Stumpjumper, although you'll get around fine on a Solaris, it won't be as much fun.

As for recommends, which end of the Lakes did you end up at?

Coniston is where we will be based...but have the car for anything further afield.

For a short opener rather than just the NF trail centre, get on the road which runs to the east of coniston water, then climb up the zig zag forest track which starts at Cock Point (lol). When you hit the top fire road (marked as a BW), turn south and follow it, turning off to Parkamoor (nice view, tick), then descend past the farm buildings before a short sharp climb and turn L. Follow doubletrack until it reaches another fire road, but go straight across onto a BW singletrack descent and follow this across a couple of fire roads until it pops out onto a road. Turn L, up through Satterthwaite (pub with garden), then on to Grizedale Visitor Centre. Climb the first couple of sections on the NF trail until you pop out on the same top fire road you were on before - follow this north past a cleared section of forest, then descend the BW down to the right of Lawson Park until you hit the lake road again.

There are loads of options for full day rides out of Coniston.

Thanks for the suggestions. Giving this a bump to see if anyone has any more trail recommendations for more demanding trails/rides than the trail centres have to offer

Get hold of the Vertebrate Graphics MTBing in the LD guide. Has most of the decent BWs in Grizedale and around Coniston covered. A few of them have been 'sanitised' since publication, but it is still useful in route planning.

I ended up riding the Borrowdale Bash route...starting at Keswick. That was brilliant.

Not really. Took a guide out around Coniston one day, and my friend had an engagement in Scotland the following day, but wanted to ride. So we drove an hour north and did Borrowdale on her way home.
