Absolutely love this suggestion from ukclimbing when they were debating the get orf my land attitude at present and the general view that they don't want outftowners in the lake District, at least until businesses open and they can at least make money out of them...

Or alternatively the locals who have had access to this beautiful national park for the last two months stay home and let the city dwelling people in back to back terraces and flats and minimum wage jobs emptying bins and working social care and working in warehouses can maybe get out?

Just a thought. And clearly a generalization.

Beautiful. Food for thought. I must admit that I did not agree with it, quite, but it is an interesting point.

While there is a lot of "Gatekeeping" mentality in the lakes. (People who move to the lakes, and immediately try and stop anybody else doing the same)

The main problem is we have the second highest infection rate per head outside of London, and a NHS system that struggles to cope at the best of times.

There was a massive influx of people the weekend before the lockdown started, and the infections APPEARED to spike just after, and people are genuinely terrified of it happening again.

I could drive up to Ambleside or any other of the "Honeypot" places and enjoy the quiet hills, (I am classed as an essential worker) or could cycle to Grizedale and bang in a few quiet laps without any interruptions. But that would violate rule no 1.
So I am staying at home, as is everybody else I know.

Oh that happens in most National Parks!

not sure why you wouldn't do either of those now seeing as it sounds like you are local. infact cycling to grizedale for a ride has been ok to do since lockdown started, i've ridden the 6 miles there for a ride around quite a few times.

That's the point I was trying to make.
It's not that the locals are wanting to keep the lakes all for themselves, its genuinely because people are dying.

Maybe I'm just a soft git, but I was keeping to the spirit of the law rather than to the letter.

And I agree doing a few quiet laps of grizedale without passing another soul cant be a bad thing, but what happens when everyone does it?

The hills and forests have been round for long enough, they are still going to be there when it all calms down

And to be fair, I avoided Ambleside like the plague before lockdown, so cant see any reason to go now everything is shut😁

I don't see why UKC are pushing that point. Best to just stay at home / stay local. While it may be ones god-given right to visit the Lakes, England has the second highest death rate in the world and the North-West is fast becoming the epicentre.

The Lakes will still be there in a few months time, unlike the tens of thousands who have succumb to this disease.

Best to get out and about and practice common sense imo.

Common sense is surprisingly un-common,
Especially recently.

Never really liked it much when I lived there but still have to go back a lot working.
Apart from work just go there most tuesday nights for a ride.

And according to my wife Ambleside was empty at lunchtime today so maybe we haven't had the predicted influx of people unless they where all up on the hills in which case i wouldn't see any issue.

Had a look at the LDNP website early afternoon and their car park update thing seemed to suggest most places were quiet. Just Dunmail Raise, Glenridding and Ennerdale that were busy. Presume Ennerdale was West Coast locals venturing out a bit.

This being stw, I'm guessing you're trolling. So a stw response might go something like
'you sound like one of those dangerous types lacking any common sense, please stay indoors and save lives' 🙂

They're not. It was a single post from a UKC user not a trend or official statement.

It was a simple question requiring simple clarification.

Isn’t the point made by the UKC poster the same argument that led to the creation of and access to parks like the Lakes? My grandparents were of the generation that got on their bikes at the weekend to escape from the industrial towns of the Midlands to the Peak District eventually moving to the Lakes. The UKC poster has a valid point in the sense we all need access to green spaces and the erosion of those spaces in towns and cities is detrimental to all our health. And no I’m not advocating getting in the car and driving to the lakes right now.

had a drive up to grizedale and a ride on a load of enduro trails with a mate this morning.
blind lane car park and the one next to it where quite full but we only met a few others once into the forest.
was good, very dry and all the roots weren't trying to kill you like they normaly do.

Is the main car park at Grizedale Visitor Centre open, do you know?

Not planning to use it myself, but the answer will be informative about the attitude being adopted toward visitors while the café can't open.

Not that the car park isn't a money spinner in it's own right.

never went past the main car park but last i heard it isn't open nor is moor top. blind lane and bogle crag are open.
i assume the forestry are keeping them closed around here to put people of travelling in from out of the area as some foresty sites in england are open.

Well that's obviously the other end of the spectrum to not going out until Covid is done. The question is where's the middle ground?

My Dad has a lovely anecdote about stopping off in one of the popular villages in the lakes when out on his touring bike. He was met with some objectionable comments from A resident of the village, who had a clearly southern accent, about too many people coming to the village and spoiling it for locals.

He was doing a loop of various dales and returned to the said village to stay in a BnB there.

You can guess who was the owner of the BnB was....
