Looking for some ideas for a good day out Saturday in the lakes, ive ridden Nan Bield Helvellyn and around Coniston to death, Im tempted by starting at Keswick and run the first part of the Bash over Wandlathe to Honister then down Warnscale bottom and back via RiggBeck under Whiteless Pike.

If anyone else can offer suggestions im all ears. Techy and flowey would be perfect

That sounds a decent plan, though I'd add in Walla/Falcon crag for sure at the start. I also prefer Gasgale gill and over Grizedale pike to Riggbeck, but it'd add on a fair bit of time.

Walla would be a given at the start, I will have to look at the Gasgale gill run as just needs me back towards Braithwaite 🙂

Defo start with Walla Crag..the drop to Ashness bridge is sublime.
Warnscale was a bit mehhh for me, couldn't get any flow..stop..start.
One loop I've got my eye on for the future you might consider is up to Dale Head from opposite Honister mine..to the tarn if you like, then along the fp following Newlands beck to little town then either road back to Keswick or the BW on that side of Catbells.
You can also drop back down to the bash route from Dalehead tarn through some abandoned mines and slate rubbish to join the bw before Castle Crag. Let us know how you get on with pics please ☺️

Aye, I've had my eye on that for a while Jekkyl, though I really can't be arsed with Castle Crag descent, tis a tad dull, always feel it's a waste of height!.

The drop down from Dale Head is pretty techy (mainly pitched) and also quite a bit stop/starty, though it's been quite a while since I last did it. If you have a full day you could try the four passes but it's a big day out for short'ish miles (16 miles or so).

If you do Dale Head down to the Tarn then you could either drop back down to Castle Crag or go along to Maiden Moor, though that has had some "fixing" done recently.

Other option from Dale Head is to try Hindscarth, also quite techy but with some nice singletrack mixed in.

Be worth checking weather before as low cloud, wind or just crap conditions that we have this time of year could make for a slog of a ride.

Ground conditions are fine. I was in borrowdale weekend just gone and we hiked up to Scarth Gap and also round Castle Crag the next day. Only snow was on very high tops in the distance, lots of flooding in parts next to any river or lake though.

Thanks for the very kind offer but that looks more like a weekend ride for me 🙂 as id have a couple of hours drive back to Saddleworth after

I think the two who are coming with have decided Keswick over Whiteless and back via Grisedale and maybe a lap of Whinlatter ..

If that’s the plan I’d park at whinlatter and use the south loop to get altitude on Grisedale and head over to Whiteless Pike from there. On return, descend from Grisedale pike via hobcarton end back into whinlatter (there’s a track with some built drops in the forest towards the bottom, if that’s your thing).

I'd go with whatever TomB says, he's kept me right with some great routes on a few occasions, top man.

TomB I was going to park at Keswick Rugby club and just ride over Coledale beck and over Wandope , down Whiteless and back over Gasgate cragg and like you said back down Hobcarton intop Whinlatter, finishing in the George at Keswick for cow pie.

@charlielightamatch you must know the wife two kids and never anytime scenario

Steve, turn right towards the bottom of Whiteless and head down rannerdale, then cross the bridge and you can stay off road for a bit on the way to gasgale Gill. Finish you time in whinlatter with the BW to thornthwaite (seldom seen) or climb to the top of south loop and pop through the trees and descend to Braithwaite from sleet how. (Might be slippy grass at times depending on rain.) have fun!

Looks good, At top of GGG you don't have to go north over to Hopegill head, you can carry straight on to Hobcarton Crag, if you're short for time/tired!.

I love it up there, NW fells are awesome, I've said it before, I'd happily just ride about on the broad ridges and summits up there, it's a special place.

Have a good one mate, get us some pics.

How did it go? Great day for a ride out, although the breeze might have added a bit to the exposure on Whiteless.....

Whinlatter up to Grisedale

UpColedale

getting there

Set off from Keswick at 9.30am on the dot , and started up Coldedale , it soon became apparent that the low cloud at the top wasnt shifting and it was going to get much windier as we shouldered up , We managed to make good time and got some how to the top of Wandope, but to be fair neither of us fancied trying to ride Whiteless today, the wind was to strong to try and drop to Buttermere . We turned back and headed from Grisedale which felt like we were assisted wit the wind pushing behind. We didn't risk Hopegill head, just straight to the top, we met a few lads trying to ride down but to be fair the 2 behind were struggling to walk let alone ride. We managed to drop straight of the top down the wall to the top of Whinlatters Red, and after getting feeling in my fingers back we spent the last couple of hours doing both reds and blue before getting back to the car. Disappointed beyond belief but the fell will be there next time im not sure we would have been if we tried it today. Third time lucky for Whiteless next time !
