I'm heading up to the Lakes for some road riding, and checking out some routes. I know that the A591 is closed to cars between Grasmere and Keswick, but does anyone know if it is passable by road bike? (Will be on a Saturday or Sunday, in case that makes a difference re on-going work and machinery).
Ta 🙂
I kipped in the van at the Pub just before the closure at the Kings head (Keswick end) and it looked completely fenced off.
This news item says there is now a temporary road for a shuttle bus, pedestrians and cyclists.

But, I had heard that it is now restricted to just the shuttle bus as the temporary road is too narrow to pass cyclists. Any update much appreciated 🙂
I think the temporary road is the wee road around the west side of Thirlmere.
Tbh, I found nothing of much use online for up to date road closures in the Lakes last month, and quite a few business folks I spoke too were not impressed either.
Would also be handy to actually say on the road signs how far down the road the closures are, as the Kings head was still open, but right at the closure, but anyone starting off on that road that saw the sign who didn't actually know that, would possibly have not bothered.
Alternative route is over the struggle from Ambleside, and cut left at Aira force once through Glenridding.
The temporary route is the road round the west side of Thirlmere, then a forest track to the east of the A591. I'd read it was open to bikes, but sounds like that may have changed.
I rode the west side of Thirlmere, Keswick to Grasmere, a couple of weeks back, so can't say for sure it is still the same situation, but it was open to bikes, pedestrians and local buses at the time.
When you reach the A591 at the Grasmere side there are roadworks and signs aplenty telling bikes to dismount and walk the new stretch of tarmac, that diverts around the old road.
To be honest it was health and safety gone mad at the time I passed through with how they were policing cyclists and wouldn't be surprised if they have stopped bikes.
Thanks all 🙂
Just spoken to a very helpful chap at Keswick bikes as well (many thanks!), who has said similar - open to cyclists, but might have to walk a bit.
Looking forward to it - staying Grasmere and glad to be spending a few pounds in the local accomodation and inns as I think they've lost a fair bit of income from reduced visitors due to the flooding and road closure.
