You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Yesterday I got up early and nailed a days work by lunchtime - really pleased.
My wife and little boy were due home at 3:30 do off out I went from Crookes through lodgemoor up to stanage. Down the First corner of the descent which I’ve ridden countless times, then it all went tits up.
Over the bars, foot planted behind a rock, I carried on forwards - look down and my foot is at 45 degrees to my leg 😖 4 lads cane to help whilst the mountain rescue and helicopter 🚁 came.
Now in the northern general awaiting an operation to plate my ankle. Looking at 3-6 months until I’m up and about on a bike.
Feeling shit 😭😭😭
awww man, it's an easy thing to do, we've all been there and crashed. Good luck with the surgery 🙂
Thanks buddy appreciate that - feel so low
Really need my wife and kids But that’s a no go 😢
Sorry to hear that dude, Nasty injury . Try to focus in the positives, you WILL be back, you WILL ride again. Plus you’ll be on the forum a lot as you convalesce 😀 All the best in your recovery.
Just to confirm it hurts like ****
more morphine please nurse !
One of the perks there is an endless supply of nurses and drugs 🙂
And men with flatulence, super snorers, and nutters
Oh man. Tough gig. Heal up soon 👊
Been there, done similar to my wrist. Off the bike for 10 months. Loved the drugs! Do the physio!
Owchy owchy owchy.
That sucks big time. Heal quick.
And men with flatulence, super snorers, and nutters
Some of us can cover all of that in one. 🙂
Heal fast, and do NOT start browsing the Trickstuff website while dosed up on painkillers, that's only going to end one way.
Nasty injury! If you can’t heal fast - do everything possible to heal well!
That’s shite. Time to get good at that dodgy red bull MTB game on your phone. Heal fast!
Healing vibes mate. Must be hard not having the wife and kids to visit, but at least its probably spared you a weapons grade bollocking from her 🙂
If you can’t heal fast – do everything possible to heal well!
Very much this. Follow the experts advice and do the physio.
100% focussed on my physio
Need my ankle to work - self employed, 2 kids plus one on the way
top tips for hospital stays

Ive had some longish stays in over the years due to a lack of talent.
you will be right just listen to the physio and consider going private for some rehab sessions
A mate of mine had similar crash but his ankle was closer to 90°, an image I still cant get out of my head, I'll not say how long it took him to get back riding. But up in Sheffield you're made out of sterner stuff.
Ouch, healing vibes!
I actually recently had an operation where they deliberately broke my tibia and fibula as my foot was pointing at a 50 degree angle from my knee from birth, they derotated them and plated it up in the correct alignment, following years of knee issues.
Painkillers are your friend, as is doing the physio and weightbearing as much as possible as the doctor allows.
Was about 3 months until I could walk without crutches, and probably 6 months in total until i can ride offroad.
Oh dear, that's not good
It usually happens on familiar trails.
At least your in a good place to sort it, they have sorted me and Abigale from mountain bike related injuries.
Richard at Fit4-Physio in Sheffield worked wonders on Abigale to get her back to race fitness
Heal fast OP but how is the bike?
Youth of today omitting the important stuff. Don't they know the rules? mutter, mutter!
Chin up dude, after 40 years hanging around ice rinks, playing hockey, travelling to Canada in winter, i slipped on ice in the yard at work (in the uk)
That was 30/12/17.
Broken fib, chipped the tib and tallus.
Fixed with a plate, had 22 weeks off work.
It took a long time to heal, but im back, i can still do my job, still ride my bike, still skate too.
Could be worse it could be your leg.
And men with flatulence, super snorers, and nutters
If you fancy a bit of isolation... just start coughing!
Heal well 🦵
Argh, that sucks. Healing vibes.
Healing vibes man.
A week and a half ago I was cruising down a fairly mellow trail in Lydney Woods I either hadn't ridden before or it had been some time since. Quick right-left S bend leading to a curve between 2 trees. Then there was a clang, next thing I know I've been catapulted off the bike over the bars straight into the tree on the right side of the trail, basically sandwiching on impact my right-arm between the tree and my rib-cage. Also apparently twisted my ankle which I didn't even notice at the time.
After a mandatory lie-down making the wounded Wookie noise and struggling to breathe I tried to get up and failed, decided to stay on the ground for a bit. Eventually, my mate who I'd been following reappeared and thus followed a very laborious journey back to base.
Amazingly, nothing seemed to be broken although it hurt like **** to breathe for a couple of days and my ribs still ache. I had hoped to get out on the bike last Sunday but that was stopped when I sneezed on Saturday morning and was instantly back to taking 30 seconds to stand up or sit down. Everything still aches and my longing for an e-bike has increased 10-fold.
I realise that I got off lightly, it could have been a LOT worse.
Oof!
Heal well.
Healing vibes dude. Did the same injury back in 2011. Took a good while to recover but you will! Keep the physio up and try not to lose too much ankle mobility. Mine is a bit jammed up now, but thankfully doesn’t impact riding or normal life. I’ll never be a marathon runner though...at 87kg 6ft2 I was never a runner anyway! 👍🏻
Blimey. I went over the bars on the mini step after that corner but escaped with only a graze. Hope you have a speedy recovery.
Broken tib and fib end of July 2014.
Operation with plate and 7 screws whilst out in Gran Canaria and was only in hospital for 4 days I think. Different flight home form and my family and I took up 3 seats to keep my leg elevated.
Several different types of cast on my leg over here and eventually cast removed late October but I then had to have a brace on for a while.
First proper ride out was in the December.
Although the NHS were good I found that they only told me things if I asked.
On the plus side there was a nice chap on here who was offering up a load of chillies that he had grown and having expressed an interest a few weeks later a parcel arrived with a load of Chilli Jam that he had made. Very kind.
Good luck!
Ah I saw the report on that one on the Mountain Rescue FB page.
Get well soon!
Oof. Healing vibes fella.
Have you got any income protection?
One thing I'm consciously doing more these days is taking the chicken runs on the steep stuff that could go very wrong. That's not to say the innocuous stuff I've all ridden for years can't catch me out, but I'd prefer to take mitigate the risk more than back in the day.
Ouch!
GWS!
Ouch, Total Bummer, feel your pain.
I did a tib and fib in a climbing accident many 20odd yers ago, I didnt fall off, was still holding onto the crag as that bit detached and we fell together.
Anyhow, ended up me having a Tibia nail (rod down the middle of the big one), fibia had to reconnect itself. Was walking on crutches in 5 days and out of hospital just after. Saved up painkillers for the walking assessment so I could get out. Obviously takes a while to get back to full strength but it will come. I still have the metalwork in there but it is no hassle whatsoever and hasn't effected my riding at all. I've even run a few ultra-marathons on it.
Not much comfort but hopefully good to know there will be very little lasting damage. Keep pressing that morphine button if you've got one!
I guess we're all aware of and cautious of what an OTB is but in this case it sounds like it was not how, but where you landed that buggered you up which is just bloody unlucky and could be the result of any type of unscheduled dismount.
Heal fast dude and get yourself a copy of Lonely Mountains Downhill on whatever games console you and the skids have. And remember people on here will go out of their way to pick people up when times get tough be that mentally, physically or monetary. Don't suffer.
Very best wishes for the recovery mate.
Also, take good care of yourself, proper sleep, lots of water and good nutrition makes a massive difference on recovery
Sh!t the bed Rob, that sucks!!! . Healing vibes to you mate, try to focus on the positives. Hard sometimes I know when you're laid up and everything is just rolling round in your head, along with all the 'what ifs' but the time will come, and you'll be back out doing stuff you love again.
I had a week courtesy of the NHS a couple of years back after an OTB on Mother Cap resulted in a lacerated/split kidney. I managed to get home ok and round to A&E. From there it was a series of scans, drugs and ambulance over to Stepping Hill. A week in hospital, more tests, a couple of operations later and still bruised I was allowed home. I've been back for further scans and that but have been given the all clear. I did manage to get out on the bike after a coupe of months, but was very tame stuff. Back to normal now and I try not to think about it when on the bike, as it was just one of those things.
All the best to you pal.
i saw the edale mr post too last night, general aren't too bad but as above you'll need to ask questions to get the best info, advice and outcome.
Another vote for rich a fit4physio if you do any private stuff. I'd also talk to the guys at physioclinic.net to see if they can offer anythng additional - I've been before with breaks (non plated) and the stuff they do (and only they in the uk pretty much) definitely aids recovery.
Seems a slightly extreme way of getting out of packing boxes for that house move though 😉
Also saw the post on a Edale MRT and thought it might be someone on here. Guessing it was the left hander at the top of the Plantation descent just before the slabs?
Heal well though OP, know a fair few doctors and nurses at the NGH and you’re in good hands.
I’d done the left hander and was going I’ve the rock that’s a triangle that you need to go down the nose of, front wheel didn’t grip and straight forwards to the rock right On the edge, without it I would have gone over and down down down 😢
This thread is best stw - made me laugh (Steveh) and cry - you lot are bloody ace
Foot hit the rick on the second pic down - old skool tv size
Gutted for you, so easily done.
A random place to crash for sure, gritstone is supposed to be super grippy not slippy! Have you got an operation date yet? Is it ankle you've done or lower leg?
If you've got a laptop or tablet with you get the video calls going!
@steveh it was almost too dry and I didn’t commit - my fault totally. I had the op 12 hours ago with a stroke of luck the foot and ankle specialist was in BC and had a spare slot so That worked well. I’ve had a lower leg nerve block so not felt anything at all since but it’s slowly starting to prickle back into some sensation, scary time seeing your foot and it not doing anything at all 😖 hopefully I get to go home soon to see my family And my god has it been tough not being able to hug them. The road to recovery starts here.
As well as the physio I’m planning an extensive stay fit process and then a lot of road or gravel rides.
Any exercises I can do without the knackered leg? Also to strength later apart from calf raises what can I do?
Need a large rd or gravel bike for winter miles and summertime smiles
Oh no!
I also saw the mountain rescue report on Facebook... and thought it might be someone on here!
I’ve also Ruined myself on the plantation descent. Went otb lower down and opened up my knee. Got me a night in the northern general as well.
You’re in good hands there...
Healing vibes...
Cheers buddy
I know you in real life don’t I?
It uses more calories walking with crutches than it does without, so ‘when you are able’
Get up and about.
I was aware after about 3 weeks that i could flex the muscle on the front of my shin that pulls the foot up, without pain, so i did a fair bit of that.
Be careful on the crutches, i was on quite a lot of codeine, and i fell a couple of times because i was sort of halfway over before i realised anything was happening.
Take pictures, they can be a good way of looking back, i lost about half the muscle mass in the affected leg, but it has grown back.
As if by magic.
Just went on FB and it showed me a memory of the first time I managed to get my skates on after the accident, 16 july 2018, 6.5 months after it. I remember that I didn’t feel too confident on the ice, but I managed anyway.
The first ride picture i can find is 11th march, so that was around 9 weeks after the accident, I remember being quite pleased with that, as i was non weight bearing for 6 weeks.
I distinctly remember feeling weak, and careful.
Probably worth mentioning that every time I went out on my bike, my leg felt stronger and less painful the next day. It happened a few times before I connected the dots of course.
Anyway, if I remember anything else that might help, I’ll stick it up here.
That’s ace
Just got my crutches and the ok 👌🏿 to go home. Back in 2 weeks for an assessment and hopefully pot off/boot on and then weight bearing. Lined up a road bike too
Sounds good. Hope it's not too bad. I will say again talk to fit for physio about exercises, riders and great physios, would be worth a few quid. It's what all the pros would be doing.
Cheers Steve just bookmarked it And will call them
Appreciated
I know you in real life don’t I?
Not sure? Possible in Sheffield...
Most people I meet out on the trails for the first time say “oh I’ve seen a picture of your knee”
It’s on this strava ride if you’re not too squeamish. I never posted it in any other social media so only cyclists get to see it...
https://strava.app.link/rDIGpdVva8
That knee looks like mine from Xmas eve 9 years ago
Keep your chin up:

Chin is firmly up but **** me it hurts now the nerve block is worn off
Broke my tib and fib about 15 years ago on the Dyfi Enduro.
Took a while to get back on the bike but made a 100% recovery, take it easy and listen to the doctors.
Use the free time to do something else, I learnt the guitar andAutoCad.
Me, currently recuperating from a fractured tibia.
I'd like to recommend that your missus and yourself use separate (single) duvets in bed. You don't want your wife to roll over in bed and wrench your leg to the side!
I bought some Gordon Ellis bed-risers a while back as a way to cram my guitar cases under my bed. They also make it far easier to get in and out of bed.
It won't hurt to stock up on a load of kitchen towels (the blue printed stuff tends not to disintegrate) and some alcohol-based mouthwash (for its antibacterial properties) and keep it next to your bed for cleaning your hands.
Get well soon😛
First night done, cocodamol before sleep. Stairs are hard - bedroom on 2nd floor - loo on first floor - first tears of frustration have flowed. Pain is very real but bearable
You will improve v quickly at this stage, not healing exactly, but youll get more used to moving on crutches.
I live in a 3rd floor flat, 30 miles away from the hospital, so I easily had plenty of time to start feeling uncomfortable before we got home.
I ended up shuffling up the stairs on my bum.
Can I ask - what happened to your bike? Did the mountain rescue keep it for you?
Stairs are hard
If you've not been told, go up leading with your good foot, down with the bad (good foot to heaven, bad foot to hell).
I broke the end of my fibula in Morzine 2005. I was riding the next day- I thought I had just sprained my ankle.
After a few weeks and it was still painful, the gp suggested it was broken and I was in a back splint for 4 weeks.
Heal well.
Chris - mountain rescue guy lives round the corner so dropped it in my kitchen before I’d even got to hospital - legend
Brief update - reality is kicking in 😢 watching my kids and wife off to play football in the park, not being able to get up to do anything quickly, lots of swearing and tears, pain I’ve never experienced coupled with cancelling customers - all pretty rubbish.
Positives - so many - people just being ace, my family, my new found drive to get this shot sorted.
I’m up for trying any method to get better well and get better quickly, never been a quitter but this is a whole new me, no self pity, just gonna sort shit out.
Opportunity to take a different view on my business And plan to grow and improve it, review what’s going well and how I can adapt, get the paper side sorted, finish off my professional development stuff for now. So many things!!
Anyway off to make lists!! Speak soon
Keep the fibre & water going in so your stools are soft 💩
