Hi, as my wife is now into 30mile road rides, ahem, she needs better padding for her, you know what. What would be a good seat or short option?

I don't have much problem with mens' saddles but a lot of ladies recommend the Selle Italia gel flight (or something like that). For something cheaper try a Charge Spoon or Ladle. Alternatively if you have a Specialized store near you then they can measure her sit bones and recommend the right size saddle.

Shorts wise, I rate any of the Gore 3/4 ladies tights - comfortable pad AND flattering.

My girlfriend really really suffered on her saddle that came with her Giant Avail so we tried a specialised xc men's saddle off a friend but same problem, then we tried a fizik gobi which rubbed the skin of her tailbone!

Eventually we went to the specialised concept store and had her ass measured and got a women's specific road saddle and it is amazing according to her, no pain at all, it has a massive cut out down the middle and at the back, it was £80 though!

Shorts wise she uses altura padded shorts!

I've got the Selle Italia DIVA on both my mountain bikes and the Selle Italia SLR ladies gell flow on my road bike. Both have been excellent. I used to ride with a mens saddle, but got one of these when I did the W2W and now you can see they are on all my bikes. Not cheap, but worth it if you ask me! Also, if she doesn't have a sore 'you know' she is likely to be a happy cyclist, which makes you life happier....well worth £80 if you ask me!

Shorts: my shorts of choice are some 3/4 length Trek/Bonty knickers (dont know the name) and Castelli Perla Shorts (currently £45 from Edinburgh Bike).

Thanks, she did the full 'set up' session when bought her Roubaix and that helped a lot. The Selle Italia gel flight looks very good so we will check that out.

The Assos shorts appear to get a good review from the ladies, will also look at the Altura pro gel, thanks.

Exactly! I would love some ASSOS womans shorts, but for that you can get a great saddle and some mid price shorts and still have change!

Firm saddle...shape is everything though. I've heard good things about the Charge Ladle.

Good shorts. I like Pearl Izumi.

Udderly Smooth or Assos if she still has issues.

I'd love my shorts if I had spent £100 on them.

Terrys Saddles are good.

Everyone is different though, and proper bike set up plays a part. Novice riders generally have the saddle too high or low, so make sure that is right too.

Old roadies trick for long races was two pairs of shorts, esp if it was wet roads and you were likely to get a wet bum. (I was a lot thinner then)
