Morning folks,

I replaced the original cable to the remote (red nylon / string type material) with a regular gear cable not so long ago.  It worked fine for all of 5 minutes but I'm now thinking that replacing like for like is the way to go.

I've found geniune cable replacement kits online but they're £25!  Anyone know of a cheaper alternative, that works?

Cheers

+1 for regular gear cable.

When you replaced the cable inner fid you replace the outer too?  The crazy lengths KS go to for weightsavings with that cable it wouldn’t surprise me to find either the bore is different or the liner is incompatible with metal cables...

Yep I replaced both the inner and the outer with regular gear cables.  Probably the cheapest I could find at the time

When mine started to play up and stick, I replaced the original stuff with a Shimano SP41 outer and a 1.1mm inner. Make sure the mechanism on the bottom of the post (Stealth) is clean too

They’re just as sensitive to cable pull problems as derailleurs.  Double check for snags/tight routing and free cable movement.  SP41 and decent inner would be a good option. Plus: check the cable end isn’t stuck in the remote. I had a freshly installed Lev once that had seemed fine in the stand but mysteriously stopped working halfway down Whinlatter. Turned out the cable end had bound in the remote when setting up and come free on the trail resulting in slack cable and no dropper...

Didn’t realise there was more than one diameter gear cable. Seems 1.1 are SRAM and 1.2 Shimano. What corresponding outers go with each?

After a particularly wet ride the original cable in mine seized in the outer.

I got a cheapy inner from the local Halfords (Clarkes?) as I needed to get up and running for the next day. Once I'd removed the old I stuck the TF2 straw into the outer and sprayed until it came out clear at the other end before I put the new inner in.

It's been fine now for about 2 years, might be worth a shot in case there's some gunk in the outer catching
