Just taken apart my 'new' second hand KS i900 because I noticed a vertical scour in on the slider part of the post; about 5mm long from the stanchion/outer seal on the back of the post. It's its first service after four-ish months of ownership and no real heavy use.

So I (finally) get the post apart and everything is reasonably clean inside. However, there are three more scour lines on the slider that don't reach above the outer seal, and several more wear lines in the slider coating where it looks like similar things could happen.

All these lines line-up with the vertical needle bearings inside the post (and I'm still not entirely sure what their job is). My assumption now is that the slider is screwed, and I'm not keen to replace it should the same happen again.

Anyone else had similar issues?

Mine's been pretty much fine otherwise and I only noticed the scour last week. 👿

Needle bearings visible on penultimate photo here (it's a great maintenance guide too): http://www.watermanatwork.com/Land/Cycling/BikeShop/KSAdjSeatpost/KSAdjSeatpost.html

Mine must be nearly 2.5 years old and only been apart once.

It still works absolutely fine however but not quite as it used to, so probably time to service again. Does anyone know of a guide to taking the damper assembly apart? There must be some oil etc in there somewhere and the guides in the links don't go to that level of detail

Go to a bearing shop with the bearing and replace it with some sort of phosphor bronze bush?

Evening, Pimpy. My Ks has been resigned to the bits bin after much scoring and overall failute. Three years or more of good service went before, though.

Think i'll fit a Reverb soon.

Give you £5 for it?

Yep, lots of scouring/gouging as you describe. Not sure it made that much difference though

Superstar told me the roller bearing thing is the 'patented' no-slop system. Need to be kept clean and greased with a very light grease to work
The 3 long pins that run through the top guide also stop it rotating round too, though as the pins/guides/etc wear you get side-to-side slop

Mine has stopped staying down. (its not a cabling issue). Out of warranty. The side-to-side play detracts from riding stuff thats slow,stop-starty,pedally, plus its got some fore-aft play which creaks a fair bit. Not really sure its worth trying to get fixed tbh

Believe ChrisL had something similiar... But had a good result with a low-cost repair from Superstar.

Just spoken to Pure Race - a service is normally about £40, but they need to assess the damage.

Interesting... I knew the two were linked.

In that case I've met Neil.
