[Closed] Kona Upper Shock Bolt Issue

Hi,

I recently bought a carbon Kona Hei Hei and since new there's been a knocking sound coming from the rear end of the bike. After a bit of investigation, I narrowed down the source to the upper shock bolt. The bolt is slightly longer than the width of the frame where it passes through and there is a small clearance with the holes that it passes through in the frame. Therefore, when the cap screw which holds it in place is torqued, the upper shock bolt is still free to move a small amount in the frame. The knock is most noticeable when picking up the bike or pushing it along but I'm not sure I'd notice it while riding.

Is this likely to be normal or might it cause damage to the frame over time? I'm wondering whether it is a warranty issue or something I should just live with. Not keen to send the bike away unnecessarily and miss a month or two of riding.

I'm also considering shortening the pin slightly so it clamps the frame but don't want to void the warranty.

Thanks,

Steve

Sounds like warranty to me

I think bikes&buddies in the Surrey Hills are the importer of that helps

Is there some kind of washer that could be used to take up the space? Or maybe a washer missing?

Bit hard to picture without knowing the age or type of Hei Hei? But I had problems with the upper shock bolt of a 2016. I can thoroughly recommend not over tightening it because the thread stripped out of the rocker on mine. Real pain to fix.

Bikes and Buddies are excellent.

Thanks for your replies. There's definitely nothing missing as I've got the exploded drawing from Kona. I'm speaking to the shop I bought it from but can't see much that can be done other than a slightly shorter upper shock bolt. I just can't see how there's going to be enough pretension from the M4 locking cap screw to prevent it moving about under load. Seems like a poor design to me. It's a shame as I really like the bike other than this one issue and it's perfect for the type of riding I do.
