Anyone got one?
What's it like?
Thinking of basic gravel bike.
How wide tyres can it fit?
Any good for light single track?
What abou light touring?
Got one for commuting on a few months ago. I'm not really a roadie - mtb rider at heart but I did have a giant defy before which I can compare to; the honky tonk has much more relaxed geometry which for me makes it a massive giggle to ride: Its really nimble and can be hopped around pretty easy. Its not particularly quick though, either I've lost a fair bit of fitness or its the bike but I'm about 2 mph slower in a straight line compared to the defy. Not sure about the tyre width - I'm visiting the rents at the moment, can check when I get back on Sunday though.
Weaknesses: The wheels - My rear rim separated after a few months.
The brakes - shocking in the wet - think that might just be me comparing them to discs though.
Hope that helps - also, if you are in the surrey area and want to try one let me know.
Thanks for that. Won't be able to drop around though, as I live in tasmania :p
Wonder why it's soo much slower, maybe the wheels? Or all down to geometry? That's a fair bit slower. Not sure I want to lose that much speed, I'm coming from a specialized tarmac.
Maybe better to try for a cx bike then.
Managed to break 3 (yes, three!) Honky Tonk frames over a couple of years. Failed in the same place every time, drive side join between the chain and seat stays, just above the rear mech. All replaced under warranty but after the 3rd instance, I asked for another make which Evans kindly agreed to sort me out with.
I'm no Clydesdale and I can't claim to generate massive wattage so looks like a manufacturing fault. Model years were 2009/2009/2010 so maybe fixed now?
Apart from the failures, which thankfully were never catastrophic but only gave a strange wallowy feeling at the back end like a rear puncture and didnt happen far from home, I quite enjoyed the ride for fit and comfort but agree about the stately pace of riding which I'd attributed to it weighing about a ton.
