Am I correct in thinking that I could use my old iPhone to follow routes on Komoot if I download them to use offline even though it won’t have a sim?

That's exactly what I use. A cheap battery case gives it epic range. I use an old SE.
It's better than using my current phone due to the lack of compass on a Moto G7

Ive just set up an old iPhone 5 to use with with the OS app. Already had a heavy duty case for it. First trial gave 7 hours with the screen always on. Handy as a secondary means of navigation.

Don’t you need a sim for gps?
You can just get a cheap payg one if needed.

Chew, I’ve downloaded the routes to use offline so hopefully as the guys say above it should be ok.

No. A-GPS uses the mobile phone network to get a faster first fix but it’ll still get a GPS fix without mobile signal, just takes longer.

Yeah ive got no sim in mine.
Saw a guide online that said I'd need a SIM to set the phone up, but it set up no problem without a sim.
Will be trying low power mode next to see how that affects the OS app and the battery life

Nope, same as you don't need a sim in a Garmin.
You could tether the iPhone to another phone if you need data anyway.
I do sometimes if I want to change route.
