One of my Shimano SPD pedals has started clunking at the bottom of the stroke but appears to have no detectable play at all. It is a caged 530 I think and is fairly old. Has anybody else had this noise in a pedal that otherwise spins freely and has no play?
Is it worth stripping or just go for new ones?
I suspected this last week, see the bottom bracket creak woes thread. Before you got to the replacement expense or repair effort, try swapping for a different set of pedals just to confirm it's actually those that are doing it. Definitely wasn't my pedals, and annoyingly I've yet to identify what the actual problem is.
Servicing is actually very easy though if you've got the splined tool to remove the spindle from the pedal body. Plenty of YouTube videos to show you.
