So, I was knocked off my bike today! Well, more like a car ran over me. Car decided to turn right in front of me as I was coming down a hill! Suffered a broken nose, bust up knee, f..k off big lump on inner thigh (ooh!) and few cuts and scrapes. Very very lucky, paramedic was amazed I didn't have multiple breaks, prob a 20/30 mph impact!
Anyway i'm lucky to be able to write this, just bummed that they cut off ALL my gear....3 HH base layers, jersey, gilet, bibs, new sealskinz socks, the works.....anyway all replaceable.
Just had codeine and a beer so all is good.
The end
BTW the car came off worse..bust headlight, smashed windscreen & large dent in roof!
3 base layers?!
Heal fast.
3 base layers?!
Insurance job innit 😀
Get well soon.
Insurance job innit 😀
my exact thought upon reading it!
EDIT: but heal up - I witnessed a guy getting hit by a bus today, just caught the rear wheel of his bike as he tried to make a gap that wasn't there, he was fine though and it was 100% his fault, even he admitted it!
Glad you sort of walked away from it.
Personal Injury claim right there
Same thing happened to me car turned right across me while i was doing 27mph downhill went straight into the side and through the window and smashed up my face and bike
18 months later im still waiting for my compo but they did pay to replace my bike after 9 months
Is it bad that I smiled when I read there was more damage to the car than you?
Hope you heal fast dude 🙂
Get well soon
http://www.cycleaid.co.uk/ for free advice and to make a claim againt other vehicles insurers.
Glad youre well enough to type etc, some cyclists get killed after being run over by vehicles.
Ouch. How's the bike?
Been there done that. Word of warning tonight you're all a bit high on the adrenalin of it all you'll hurt a lot more over the next few days and probably have a bit of a downer. So keep your pecker up and get all your bike gear replaced by them
You'll be stiff and sore tomorrow. Everything else can be fixed with money.
Out of interest what did the car driver say?
No doubt some tool will be on later to say you should have predicted they'd pull out in front of you and you should suck up the damage and chalk it up to experience.
In the real world get on to your household contents insurer, they should cover you for legal aid etc.
Get we well soon crash test dummy
Glad you're still in the land of the living, all the best, hope for a speedy and full recovery. Shame about the clobber, maybe a onesie morphsuit (or 3 - ie base, mid, outer, like a Russian doll superhero) in future. Cheaper, infinitely more distinctive/visible. Done deal?
Ciao Marco, same happened to me last week. Some bloke opened a car door on me,broken nose and arm in plaster(not broken).Hoping to be back at work on tuesday and on the bike next weekend.
Keep an eye on how the knee is doing, they can be funny things.
My worst so far this winter is last night lleaving the car park at work. Glass surface ice, bruises and bust mech hanger. Hakkas in the post, I'd been considering them a while, decision made on floor in car park.
I've sailed through a rear screen as a kid and had a transit van door opened on me in the past. Hurts.
I'll second that it's going to hurt a lot more tomorrow unfortunately. Get well soon and don't let them get away with it. Rules 170, 179 and 180 at least.
Hey guys
Thanks for all the well wishes....your right...it hurts a lot more today! Face looks nice.
Unavoidable crash as the car did not stop and turned in front of me....she was very shaken and admitted fault.
3 base layers = vest and 2 longs!
acidchunks - no its not bad 😉
Project - scary but true
Thanks again everyone
BTW - personal injury claim? through a specialised firm or my own household insurance?
Sue them till the pips squeak. Claim everything you can for the actual losses, but add on as much as you like for pain and suffering. You might as well look back on it as a painful but not entirely negative experience 🙂
thecaptain - pips squeak! Like that.
Just waiting for the police to come with their details so will know more then. Yeah gonna try and be positive, cheers
And now the side effects of Codeine to look forward to... 🙂 On the upside, it's new kit time 🙂
BTW - personal injury claim? through a specialised firm or my own household insurance?
I'd recommend http://www.bikeline.co.uk/ - the might have legal cover on your house insurance which you can use to engage them (you don't have to go with who your household insurance want to use - I've got mine to pay for bikeline as I'd rather use a specialist), though I'm sure they'd be very happy to take on your case for no win, no fee if not. I'm sure some on here will complain about the claim culture, and it upping their premiums, but you should get a decent payout for your injuries as well as replacing your kit, so make sure you've got those documented, and contact legal bods ASAP so they can recommend what else you need to do whilst you still have injuries which can be documented.
Oof. Bugger. Get well soon.
If your a member of British cycling they offer free legal support and assistance. They were very helpful when it happened to me. My case was referred onto http://www.leighday.co.uk/ who were very good the whole process of claim and compensation was wrapped up in about 11 months.
Write down everything, all financial losses including, kit, bike and loss of earnings (inc potential overtime) Everything that was said and who by at the time. List injuries and photograph them and record all treatment you receive.
Take it easy and get well soon
I can only echo what's been said above. Especially the caution about your knee. I thought mine was just bruised after being hit (also a car turning right in front of me), went for a ride a few weeks later and it felt like there was a cheese grater under my kneecap. Cue several months (if not a year) of physio, foam-rollering and pain.
Material damages should be quick and easy to get back (assuming the driver doesn't contest your version of events) by providing receipts/costs of replacements and photos of damage. For a PI claim you'll have to wait until you're fully healed.
great advice
thanks again everyone!
Hope you get mended and recompensed soon Marco.
When I read these threads I always feel lucky that I have no need, or desire, to ride on the road. I'll stick to the trails.
Heal fast and get well soon. Sounds like you were lucky with only having those injuries. Must be a tough bar steward.
Same happened to me, I claimed through the drivers car insurance policy. Paid out for my bike and injury within days!
Trevor.
Paid out for my bike and injury within days!
A note of caution about accepting an early settlement figure - within days you may not know the true impact of your injuries - look a few posts up at bails' story of his knee - if he'd accepted "full and final" settlement within days, it would have been on the basis of a bit of bruising - then you'd be paying for that year's physio yourself when it turns out further down the line that the injuries were more severe than they first looked.
I'd advise not agreeing an injury settlement until all the injuries are properly and fully dealt with, because until they are, you don't know what they're going to cost you.
+1 for Bikeline.
I used them when I got knocked off by a cab, very cycle friendly and kept me updated. They didn't argue when I asked them to go back to the driver's insurance company and ask for more, got the extra as well.
Oh unlucky. I'm not into the road as much these days as this is the worry. It's not getting any safer out there. Rest well!
Glad to hear you are ok. Could have much worse. My neighbour got knocked off in the same manner. Driver turned right across him as he was coming down a hill. The police told his wife to get to the hospital fast to say her goodbyes to him. He lived but with life changing injuries. Driver was a young kid going for a razz in his older brothers Leon Cupra. Got a fine and a slap on the wrist for dangerous driving. Neighbour will never ride a bike again though. I know it was an accident and the kid made a stupid mistake but I think penalties for drivers like this need to be tougher.
