Wasn't gonna bother posting this, but then thought it was worth it to try and keep things balanced on here.
Previous brakes were Magura Julies. I had several sets of original pads on them - no problems. I then put 5 pairs of Superstar pads on them - no problems either. Comparable wear/performance for less money. Excellent.
New brakes are Avid J7's. A few weeks ago during a ride my rear brake seemed to have increased lever travel and reduced braking performance in a very short space of time.
I ordered some new pads (Superstar) as I had noticed the rear pads had been getting a bit low for a while and assumed they had given up the ghost. But, when I went to change them the other day, one pad had gone completely and I had been braking on the backing plate, whereas the other pad still has a fair amount of pad on it. Whenever I have checked the pads up to this point they always seemed to be wearing evenly and the fronts are wearing evenly too, so I can only assume that the pad material fell off the backing of this particular pad, which would explain the fast drop off in performance.
Seems a bit crap as they are original Avid pads. But, not overly bothered as the brake still worked with 1 pad & 1 backing plate.
Just wanted to bring it up, as lots of people are only too willing to slag off Superstar pads, but so far I have had 100% reliable performance from them and not from OEM pads.
That's all. Feel free to stop yawning now.
never had this happen with Avid pads, have had issues with OEM pads and now only use Avid genuine - probably you will always have the odd bad pad, it's a stressed part, suffers temp changes, dirt etc and sometimes you'll have a failure..
Count, agreed. Just thought I would bring it up to try and balance the view that Superstar pads = crap, original manufacturer pads = good.
I am sure there are 100,000's of pads out there. Some will fail & some won't. Even when this pad did seem to give up the ghost, rear braking was still acceptable with one good pad.
