I'm building a singlespeed. Shimano grx 11spd chainset. I was told this kmc z1 singlespeed chain would fit perfec. However I have to push the chain down into each tooth of the ring. And of I turn the crank the chain kind of sits onto of the teeth.

Anyone?

I think they produce both a narrow and wide option. I have the narrow...which I guess will be fine on regular chainrings (not fat/thin chainrings).

Brand new ring and brand new chain?
Might just need riding a few miles so they wear in together?

If anything is expect a SS chain to be slightly too wide for a NW ring.

I've been using SRAM 7/8 spd chains for SSing for years. Cheap and strong 😎

Are you actually using a 11speed chainring? Or a singlespeed chainring.

If you are using a singlespeed chainring are you using a 1/8th chainring?

If you are using a 1/8 chainring are you trying to use a 3/32 chain on it.

"Singlespeed" isn't enough detail. And juat to be absolutely clear you aren't trying to use a half link on a narrow wide chainring? I think you might have covered that already though.

Its the 11spd shimano narrow wide grx ring. With a kmc z1 narrow singlespeed chain. They sell a wide version too...so I guess thats the issue.

Would q regular 11spd chain be ok? Or worth waiting and ordering the ss wide version?

I'd have thought the narrow 3/32 z1 chain would still be wider than an 11 speed chain, have you tried moving it round half a link on the chainring? (Sorry for being patronising)

3/32 "narrow" is the same width as 6/7/8 speed I think, much wider than 11s.

"wide"singlespeed chain isn

Might just need to bed in a bit, if its anything like my new 12s SRAM GX it wouldn't sit properly untill it had a few miles on it. The profile of the teeth is just too accurate to how the chain latches on/off rather than being simple. symetrical teeth.

I've yet to tension the chain...could this be it? Although it feels so much more snug fitting than a regular chain with cassette

Sounds wrong to me, so your sure the narrow part of the chain in on the narrow part of the chainring?

When the chain is pushed onto the teeth fully the tolerance is tiny. So snug compared with the ss cog out back. Ill set the tension tomorrow and see how it goes. Thank you. Much appreciated

I dont actually think its the width of the chain. It looks like the width of the teeth ( looking side on) are almost too wide to fit between the chain

3/32" 6/7/8 speed chain on an 11 speed narrow wide ring? It's maybe the wide profile of the chainring binding? Maybe.

3/32 chains work perfectly on narrow wide chainrings as they are intended for use with 10/11 speed chains.
The only time you would get an issue is using an 1/8 chainring with a 3/32 chain but the GRX chainring is not going to have a 1/8 chainring, combined with the fact there is no such thing as a narrow wide 1/8.

If I get a regular chain will it have to be 11spd? Or would 10spd work?

Maybe some pictures might help see what's going on.
10 or 11 speed will both work on your chainring though.

I just tested the spare section of that chain (the part I trimmed off) on my 10sd regular (not NW) chainring...and it seated no problem as every other chain i have ever fitted.

So its something about the shimano grx NW ring and this chain

3/32 “narrow” is the same width as 6/7/8 speed I think, much wider than 11s.

Its the plates that are thinner the gaps remain the same.

The only thing i can think of is that because your chain isn't designed to have a bit of side to side play the tolerances are that bit tighter.

If I simply drape the chain over the front ring the chain sits ontop of the teeth. I have to push the chain down into the teeth for it to fit...just doesn't seem right.

Might bin it off and just go get either a regular 10 or 11spd shimano chain.

Its the pitch of the chain thats the issue. A few centermeters go on ok then it gets tight and doesn't seat unless I push chain into teeth. The internal width seems fine. The chain says...1/2" x3/32

Just tension it up and try riding it.
The pitch is the same on all chains no matter what speed they are.

Singlespeed chains are horrible. Just pop a nice 8 or 9 spd SRAM chain on there, or the 11spd one you've got.

All bike chain pitches are the same 1/2 inch.

I'd be tempted to tension it up and go for a spin.

The tensioning will pull the chain off and hopefully it'll settle down quickly.

Alternatively just buy the cheapest 1/8 chain and use that. It won't care what you throw at it.

Its about time you rode this bike Sefton before you start thinking its a bad idea. 🙂

I pretty much agree with this, except the sram comment and "nicest". Cheapest 8speed kmc and save all the offcuts for your free one 😂

never heard of this - pics needed.

Pitch will appear out if the chain is riding high, as the diam/circ of the ring gets bigger in effect

The only thing I can think of is if the narrow bits of chain are on the wide teeth and v/v but that's so obvious I can't imagine that's the case, and trying it a few times I'd think on half the occasions you'd get it correct anyway and then spot the problem.

Struggling to get back onto photobucket.

Def on the correct nw teeth of the ring (they won't even go on the wrong way).

Think I'm gonna just nip to decathlon and get a 10 or 11spd chain

I just got my cx bike out with a 10spd chain...lifted it up and draped over the grx ring and it all seated fine

Sefton. Pal. Just get an 8 speed chain stop worrying about the gear numbers of the chain. Cheapest chain you can get from decathlon.

Don't over think it all.

Cool now go and ride it! Your ss chain will probably work fine when you need to replace your current.

Well this stupid eccentric bb won't rotate around enough. The chainstay is now in the way of the pin spanner. And now the glossy black £110 bb is full of scraps and scratches...feel like screaming. Think I'm gonna have to go to tool station to buy a better longer spanner

I've never use on of those bbs but.

On my eccentric you can poke a suitable sized pokey thing like a drill or even a hex wrench aslong as it snug through the crank spider and into one of the holes then turn the cranks. They will rotate normally until they hit the pokey thing then they will lock up and you can set the tension that way.

Bought the tool from planet x now...caused enough damage trying to bodge it with a chappy cheap tool. Thanks all

Now starting to see why you had a problem with the chain 🙂

I've actually questioned if putting a rear mech and cassette on would actually be simpler. Haha

Was unlucky with the chain, the rest is using substandard tools.
