Have a few kicking about and always have one with me on a ride. Can't see any reason why it wouldn't work but doesn't anyone have a more educated opinion?

Yes, as a get me home fix if it's all you have. It probably won't run smoothly over cassette because as said it's marginally too wide. The inner dimensions are the same so it'll sit on the sprocket OK but the width of the outer plates is slightly more so may just foul on the sprockets either side as it runs over them.

edit - I mean just one link....not a whole chain. an average chain is around 112 links iirc so <1% of the chain will be oversized, and it'll hold it together just fine.
I've fairly regularly fixed with an oversize link rather than allow someone a walk home.
