Hi All,

Newbie here - am doing the SDW Winchester to Brighton next week.
Don't want too much weight in backpack, so was going to buy a Large Ortlieb Saddlebag (anyone got a used one?). Is this a good plan or should I just shove it in my pack and stop being a wuss?

So:
Phone
Map
Tubes
Levers
Multi-tool (inc chain splitter)
Water (3l camelbak)
Food - lots presumably...?
Spare jacket
Lights (in case!)

What else should I take?

Thanks for your help.

You might want to add a some waterproof troos and a spare top in case it tips it down - you can get cold pretty quickly once you get wet.

Pump

Power link

Rather than a map copy sections or scan the map of the important bits

Also give the bike a proper once over, do the M check:

Rear wheels/tyres, cassette, gears
Seat and front cranks and what have you
then ...... the rest

An hours of prep and checking can save nightmares

You're riding solo presumably?

Spare gear cable (weigh nothing), Patches (for tubes and tyres), Cash and Card, SRAM chain links, couple of zip ties.

Have fun and Good luck!

Gaffa tape - wrap it around the shaft of your pump. Electrical tape is handy too.

Winchester to Brighton is a fair old distance - are you intending to do it in one go (bearing in mind you say you're a newbie) - have you done other long distance rides before? Fair play, by the way. 😉

Same as a short day ride, but add a bit more food and another spare inner tube. 🙂

Don't know that route but when riding in remote locations tend to include a foil blanket just in case.

If the weather looks clear then a small tube of sun cream/block.

My bag for my biggish ride in the Lakes at the weekend included -
Camelbak with 3l water
Food inc Sarnies, couple of cereal bars, bag of haribo, some fruit
Pump with a metre of ducktape on it, spare inner tube, co2 inflator, levers, tubeless repair kit
Multitool
2 spare powerlinks and some spare chain
Phone
Windproof proof smock
Hooded Proshell waterproof jacket
Base layer
Map
GPS - on bars
Foil blanket
Suncream

I'm with PeterPoddy on this. Its hardly extreme, and just a long day ride. I'd take my normal stuff and a bit more food+water.
The heavier the backpack, the more likely you'll get some discomfort/back pain.

Phone/GPS
2xInners
small puncture repair kit
Pump/CO2
SRAM links
cable ties
Multitool
Thin jacket

If you dont know the SDW, then best take some map cutouts, but it is straightforward to follow.

Cheers all... links, chain and gear cable sound like good/light additions. Foil blanket also worth it.
Am doing this ride with the nutty crowd who are going all the way to Eastbourne in one day!
Winch-Brighton is long enough for newbie me. Have a feeling I will be out-paced from the off so wanted to make sure I am self-sufficient.

TON - I will have that saddle bag - I replied to your original post last week but never had a response please mail me:

whistle in case you fall down a hole
needle & wire/line in case your sidewall splits it guts
pain killers
gels

(I like the duck tape around the pump - good idea)!

Tyre boot & zip ties (if no tyre boot, toothpaste packet will do) to repair a split sidewall?

If you've got somewhere on your frame for a bottle cage, you can ditch the camelbak, too. Even if it's hot, you should be fine between the water taps, especially if you guzzle a load while you're stood at the tap and refill before you set off.

Just make sure you've got the taps marked your map, and that you remember to stop at them!

You'll sweat less without a pack on, too.
