Sad to hear this, hope he doesn't have long term health issues.
Always liked his riding style and just an absolute beast. The sight of him hitting the front to put the hurt down must have brought dismay to many a rider over the years.
I remember him finishing a TT and one commentator saying that he couldn't have gone any faster to which Chris Boardman responded 'yes but he could have kept going at that pace for another 3 hours'.
Chapeau.
Bad news. A great rider and super admirable for the way he tapped out the power - didnt realise he's 38! Maybe he pushed a little too hard.
Go Kiri.
Favourite rider in the peloton, massively stylish on the bike, had a good few personal victories and as previously mentioned could really ruin people's day if required.
An absolute beast of the team Sky domination, awesome awesome rider.
Cracking rider and an almost perfect domestique. Lovely fella by all accounts too.
With him gone and Tony Martin’s powers raining, who will bring the pain at the front of the peloton now?
Apparently lotto soudal named one of their motos Vasily.
One of those riders who didn’t make headlines necessarily but could make a race.
indeed - I remember watching a stage of the dauphine and he got on the front at the bottom of the climb on the last stage and pulled for about 9minutes at a ridiculous pace and the entire peloton fell off the back until there was about 5 riders left.. immense. When he won the world TT I was really happy because he totally deserved it.
for Sky I'd imagine Rohan Dennis and Kwiato will do that job - for Jumbo it'd be Kruiswijk and MvDP
It's a sad reflection on something (maybe the state of cycling, more likely just my cynicism) that I can't read about a Belorussian cyclist of that age retiring with unspecified 'cardiac issues' and not give a little "hmmm" to it.
