morning all - doing KAW in June. Probably in 3 days. Starting in Liss.
Any recommendations for B&Bs around Salisbury and just past Wantage?
Or should I just man up and sleep in a ditch?
Is the YHA still right next to the Ridgeway above Wantage, else there is one in Streatley if you can get that far.
The one above Wantage is
https://www.courthill.org.uk/
It’s a small diversion and you loose a tiny bit of height, and can diagonal more directly to it via a connecting path (*to road junction from E side, Pewit Farm corner),
FYI, not recommending Then Streatly yha unless you want to drop height, east Ilsley both pubs have rooms , no village shop. Compton pub has rooms, village shop,
and just past Wantage?
I can put you up...if you'd prefer to camp, you can use our garden. We'll feed you and have shower etc, along with a garage full of spanners and spares.
Compton pub has rooms, village shop,
The pub in Compton is closed after end of tennancy, it's hoping to open again in the not too distant future, but i don't know yet when that will be. The new people are the same ones who run the Green Dragon just by Upton.
The Streatley YHA is about 20 yards from the crossroads in the village that the Ridgeway goes through. You can't get much closer to the route and the elevation loss is about 6 feet at most!
being picky it's probably a bit more... but i'll agree, it's not a lot... it's deffo not a game changer.
I started in reading, first night rough camped on the outskirts of a woods. We had hoped to camp in the woods but there were military operations in the area so we decided not to.

2nd night stayed here. Had the place to ourselves. A bit basic but was on route and had a shower. Phoned the owner who gave me a code and just said if you like it, leave a tenner under a book in the wooden shed/washing up place
Third night we got soaked and passed this campsite. We were going to camp but for an extra tenner we got a hobbit hut with electric. Really recommend this place.

We did the KAW in May and we found a lot of places didn't open until June or the school holidays.
We also found a lot of places were struggling for staff so either didn't serve food or only served food Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Quite a few places were shut. We planned to sleep on the ridgeway but couldn't source any food so just did a very long day all the way back to Reading.
If you do the KAW, try and take the time out to check out the ancient monuments. There were so many, not just the popular ones like Avesbury and stonehenge.
