Another grim wet commute on the winter commuter has made me realise that I've been riding my 'winter bike' now for at least half the year, and since I'm doing more than half my riding on it am considering an upgrade to something lighter, with gears.

The Kinesis 4S fits the bill, and allows me to continue running rim brakes. Kinesis seem to have rowed back on their initial claim that it will take 30c tyres with guards though, and are now claiming 28s instead.

What is the clearance like, space for a 28c Conti 4Seasons or GP4000?

Ta

Just looked - I'm able to run 4 season 28mm on DT440 rims with a full guard and no issues.

Don't know if 30s would squeeze in - might depend on rim width

Haha, thanks Rubber Buccaneer, your sympathy post got me two actual replies! 😉

Sounds good guys, I'd be running my existing Fulcrums which I think are 19mm, hopefully won't result in too wide a tyre.

Currently running 26mm tyres, and mudguards fit fine.

Toying with the idea of fitting 32mm (without guards) for an upcoming multi-day touring trip, to allow for a bit more comfort on the occasional towpath/farm track, but can't decide if that's possible.

P.S. Very pleased that I found the Kinesis, as it completely eliminated the need to consider push-fit bottom brackets

It's great isn't it, also caters to my (apparently perverse) distaste for disc brakes whilst allowing me to run wider tyres and guards on a lightweight frame.

Well, each to their own, really, but disc brakes was the main reason for me building a new road bike in the first place.

My first road bike was very kindly donated to me by a friend but, despite the brakes stopping me just fine, they felt sufficiently different to my MTBs to kill my confidence (all in the head, probably). You could always upgrade, at some point, when everybody brow-beats you into the disc brake mindset 😉
