You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
A few of us are intending to do the Kinder Classic Loop tomorrow (Jacobs, Hollins, Rushup, Roych etc).
Has anyone got first hand news of what the snow/ice is like there at the minute?
You'll definitely have snow - especially on the N. side of the hills. I was up on Millstone Edge earlier and could see that Win Hill, Mam Tor and behind them Rushup Edge and Kinder all had snow to around 2/3 the way down. Another dump was coming in around sunset when I legged it.
It won't be unrideable, but it may well be harder work than normal.
Cheers fella.
Hard work isn’t necessarily the issue, I just didn’t want to have to mince the good bits due to sheet ice or anything like that. We’ll probably give it a crack and bail if it looks iffy. I like to start the ride from Hayfield and go up Snake Path first, so could surrender after coming down off of Middle Moor if it is absolutely impossible to ride.
Around 6 inches of snow around Mam Tor this morning, was slushy on Thurs but I reckon it will be icy coming down Jacob's towards Edale as it's high up and normally there's sections of running water. Enjoy!
If you don't already check out @kofthep on twitter today.
Was up near there today - It's okay-ish - flat and downhill snow is ok if you get your arse behind the back axle, but any sort of positive gradient wasn't working for me with a Purgatory rear tyre on top of mam tor. Good to be wary of any well used trails as they'll most likely be compacted snow and icy up top - the path along the ridge from mam tor to Hollins definitely was. Found that Win Hill was riding marginally better - mucky under the snow but you had more grip.
We did the ride, it was interesting. Snake Path and Kinder Low were snowy, but not too bad. The climb to the top of Jacobs was deep in places. The last little ‘dip’ before the top of the Ladder was thigh-deep and involved carrying. The top bit of Jacobs in the sunken track was unrideable. From then on it was amusing, and needed a good sense of humour, but was pretty much rideable.
We opted for Chapel Gate to keep the climb as short as possible. The Pennine Bridleway back to Hayfield was the bit that was riding best.
Too much pushing and carrying to be considered an awesome ride but a funny day out and nice to be reminded that nature sometimes holds the whip hand.
was up mam tor road yesterday trying to do the castleton/pin dale loop.
UP mam tor was fine, but 4 foot drifts out over towatds the limestone way.
Was a laugh, but very hard work.
Loads of running water on the roads, so that will be sheet ice when the temp dips.
