How come so many folk use kilometers instead of miles when they're cycling? Is it a way to get more numbers in to your ride total? ie "I rode 40km" instead of 25 miles.
I'm on furlongs - I did bloody loads the other day 8)
partly because it is what maps are in.
Km if I'm being exact, miles if it's a rough figure
Plus miles are stupid imperial measurement, everyone should be using km
hell yeah 🙂 Good troll BTW 😉Is it a way to get more numbers in to your ride total?
I only recognise Kilometers while in foriegn don't ya know 😛
Km are stupid metric measurement, everyone should be using miles
It's for people who can't manage a proper century.
(runs and hides)
Yeah, kms are too small, too wishy-washy.
And woe betide you if you use the term 'clicks'
If you were born since about 1965 you should really be more used to the metric system.
I managed 4000 chains on Saturday
Km if I'm being exact, miles if it's a rough figurePlus miles are stupid imperial measurement, everyone should be using km
Rubbish. KM because that's what's on maps, then convert to miles so you know how far you've been, not how far a Frenchman went!
😛
But Drac, last year I managed a full Kielder 100 (Km) ,before my bike died 😀
Mostly because we use the metric system, as per @mrmo's comments maps are in kilometres when we go riding we use maps to guide us.
KMs are handy for those that find basic maths a challenge
ooOOoo, I'm guilty. I normally use miles but if the conversation is about km, I'll say clicks. Old habits die hard. (especially when you're not trying to change)
I use Km's pretty much every trail centre I've ever ridden is signed in Km's.
Other than that, I just like it
Measure pleasure in smiles.
Distance in metric and height gain in imperial as the bigger numbers are more impressive.
I'd use Kilometres on the roads too if the signs did. I generally use metric so it makes sense to do as much as possible in it.
But Drac, last year I managed a full Kielder 100 (Km) ,before my bike died
Not heard of that race is it that for junior riders?
I adopted Km for cycling after so many years of hillwalking where it's simply more convenient on account of metric mapping. I've recently started using Miles on the road as I'm getting to old to keep converting it in my head when I see road signs.
yodagoat - MemberHow come so many folk use kilometers instead of miles when they're cycling?
Pretention and/or the need to be seen as different, European or 'sophisticated'.
You got it!
What does confuse me is why people don't use Miles Per Litre for their cars these days. Probably cos it is too frightening 😛
Miles for road km for trails.
When marking up a route card it's much easier to think of 500m to next turn and read that off the computer.
I know some people find it challenging to swap between both systems but once you have enough experience and have improved your skills enough then you might be able to do it too.
Kilometres for those that can spell it , miles if you can't .
Metres for height gain, because that is how the maps are marked. Then km for distance to be consistent.
I usually think that if I or anyone else cares enough to want to know the equivalent imperial stats, then they'll be able to work it out. After all, conversion rates aren't a secret!
I use miles except when doing audaxes, when I use km. French connection innit
Always km now - bike, walking, paddling. It's what the maps are in.
Look, The Who didn't sing 'I can see for Kilometres' did they?
No they bloody well did not.
Did The Byrds sing '12.874752 Kilometres High'?
NO THEY DIDN'T.
Using kilometres says you hate music and spit in the face of songwriting.
Frankly, I'd have you all shot.
Miles all the time but I can convert between them pretty effortlessly so I'm not bothered how the maps are marked.
The 4 minute 1609.344 metres
I believe that the correct way is to refer to bigger numbers in Miles.. As in I rode 30 miles. And small measurements are to best understood when the metric system is used. The diameter is 8mm. 🙂
Did The Byrds sing 12.874752 kilometres high?
NO THEY DIDN'T.
Yeah, but The Proclaimers had that song '804.67200 Kilometres'.
Right, I'm taking names now. 😐
And when the time comes, you will be shot with a .303 inch bullet, none of this 7.62mm nonsense.
I don't think I can see this thread going the distance.
What says you, Kilometres Davis?
Right, I'm taking names now.

Give them 25.4mm and they'll take 1,609.344 metres eh?
And here are the 914.4mmbirds
Give them 25.4mm and they'll take 1,609.344 metres eh?
I would say you're taking the piss, but not sure if that will start another measured debate.
I'm inching closer to changing my view on capital punishment the longer this tawdry nonsense continues.
If I can 1.83m this out, you all appear to be in 4.83km with the Europeans.
I always quoted height gain in metres but used to use miles for distance. Forced myself to change to km as cycling is European and they use km innit.
Dunno if it's just me, but I can almost scent a metre of poetic structure, in Rusty's posts.
Anyone want a drink from my bidon?
No thanks. I've just had a drink in the Café.
You're crazy you lot, I've had enough, I'm off to the pub for a 568ml
