A month or so ago I had a really hard stack on the Steel City track at Greno, I managed to snap a ligament in my AC joint which put me off the bike until now.

I've been out for a couple of pootles, but nothing serious. I went to load the bike into the car this morning and, as I wheeled the Cotic BFe out of the door on its back wheel, I heard a knocking sound.

"The headset must be loose" I thought, whipping out my multitool in the spring sunshine.

I gently rocked the bars back and forwards, holding the brake with a firm grip and, to my horror, the bottom headset cup moved in the frame.

If it were a film, they would use that technique where they move the camera forward and zoom out at the same time.

Murdock has been an amazing bicycle, taken too young (5) by my optimistic line choice, I would have another in an instant, but none can replace him. I only had one bike, and now I have none.

Goodnight, sweet prince, your KOMs will last forever.
RIP

I'm too distraught to even think about moving on, I need time to grieve.

...... he was medium, though he always said I deserved a large. The back pain was incredible.

Think this was medium, black, 26". Shout when you've grieved or it'll just gather more dust.

Could be the lower cup which is damaged rather than the frame - I had this on an old inbred. Headtube was fine, cup had deformed. Might be worth trying a cheap new headset first...

Could be the lower cup which is damaged

Worth checking this, I once split a bottom cup in two inside the frame, manifest first as knocking but I didn't have any tools with me on the ride, carried on and then it failed properly later in the ride and then locked out the steering on a rather rooty descent 😕

the bottom headset cup moved in the frame

you can get super deep insertion headsets*, which may, coupled with some bearing seat compound, give a workable solution....

*I've seen plenty of EC34 ones, is yours an old BeFe or one of the later ones with a 44mm headtube?

Worth talking to Cotic, when I cracked my original Soul, they gave me a very good deal on a replacement, was well out of warranty too.

What about having it repaired, with a spanky tapered headtube welded on in its place? That's what I'll do if/when the headtube (integrated) knacks up on my frame.

+1 check headset cup

I did this on my 456, and the cup had separate across the horizontal.

if you were going to buy a new cotic HT it'd have to be the Solaris, the option to switch out the wheel size is a great selling point.

I'll double check the headset tonight, could well be cracked, though it was definitely rocking back and forth by a few mm. Again, a deeper headset could solve it.

I'm not overly keen on getting a new headtube fitted, I think if it were a more expensive frame, then I would, but it'd be much more hassle than just sourcing a new frame and using the old one as a lamp.

It's not the price of the thing, it's probably worth nowt, but it's the good times we had together*

*I am very obviously hamming this up a bit, I liked the bike, but it was a bike....not a dog, or a (nice) wife.*

On sale until they're gone

Piqued my interest! The current BFE is too short and not slack enough for its intentions. It would be amazeballs if they adjusted for a 65 degree HA and ~440 reach on a medium.

£279 for this. I'd buy one just for the colour if I didn't still have a purple one.

@ rickon - Agreed and a bit of that infamous steel flex would be nice, the old one had none what-so-ever.

And a steeper seat post to better suit longer travel fork configurations.
