what age did you start using them? Â My soon to be three year old is right on the limit of the wee ride, usual he rides his strider balance bike, then when he gets knackered I put the bike on my back and stick him in the weeride. Â Could I get a tagalong thingy that folds away when not in use, and then rig up his bike when he wants a tow?
is three a bit young?
i have got a trailer as well, but it's a bit of a pita for a 30min ride
We have a follow me ( https://www.followmetandem.co.uk/ ) which lets you fold it up when the kid wants to ride and attach the bike when they get tired.
Not sure it would work with a balance bike though and I don't think I'd want to tow a kid on a balance bike.
My son was 5 when we got it, my daughter is almost 4 and can ride her little 12" pedal bike reasonably well, but I'd not be too happy towing her at the moment. I guess it depends on the kid though.
He is a bit to random for the tow rope, nice idea but he tends to weave about I quite like the idea of a fixed mount because at least then I know he is directly behind me and not meandering into other bikes/prams/dogs.
he prob is a bit young yet, seem to be getting to a middle ground where he is too young for a tag along and too big for a weeride
We bought a cheap tagalong off eBay. It weighs a ton, but our (v tall) 3 year old loves it.
It was too big for her to pedal when she first tried it, so she was just freewheeling everywhere. The only challenge was getting on it, which involved me leaning the bike right over to make it a bit lower.
If we get on with the cheap one this summer, we will find a better one when she is big enough to take further from civilisation.
I looked at trail gator type things, but they have a bit of a reputation for damaging the head tube on aluminum kids bikes.
We have a couple of FollowMeTandems. We have used them with 12", 16" and 20" bikes with our 2 boys. Yesterday was our first FollowMe free ride for years. Actually my wife rode with the FollowMe attached to her bike, but undeployed.
We bought them when I saw someone using one. They are so much better than Trailgator or the like, with no play in the mechanism and son side-to-side flop. The kids bike can be released in a few seconds, and reattached just as easily.
We'll likely keep using it for while with the youngest as he isn't on a geared bike yet and he doesn't have the legs for any significant hill. His bigger brother makes do with a hand on his back on tougher climbs, and that can be a challenge for the pusher too...
EDIT:
In your situation I'd be tempted to get him on a pedal bike. If you get a 12" wheeled one, be prepared for him to rapidly out grow it. IMO it is probably a necessary step though.
