A friend has kindly given me a second hand bike for my son- which is great but has DMR pedals. I’m planning to swap them for something a little less rough on a 6 year olds shins.

Any recommendations? A little bit of grip but without a full set of metal pins, if such a thing exists!?

Thanks

My boys use proper Nukeproof pedals with proper metal pins. They get a lot less shin strikes than plastic pedals and don’t under estimate the damage that plastic “pins” can do once they have been roughed up.

I purchased some of these last month and arrived Thursday. In gold! Wellgo kc001

Fitted to the 10yrs old lads bike and they look great. Light and a good size. Not sure if this photo will work https://photos.app.goo.gl/ibpkSv4FBY1JJLTk9

Ours boys have both got the early rider pedals after the oldest got them on his bike, nice and thin and pretty grippy without being too damaging

VP push compact.
Might be called something else now but they are excellent composite/nylon pedals with metal pins.

Got some wellgo kc008. Look good and daughter likes them, wider pins so less aggressive.

Got some shin pads as well, g form kids shin pads. For football but look the same as the mountain bike ones. Lots on eBay second hand, got mine for 10.

£105 for the Hope offerings?!

Maybe not them, then.

I've just bought some of the Wellgo R146 from Planet X for £20

https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/PEWELR146/wellgo-r146-pedals

They are a nice small platform - I'll let you know what they're like when they arrive

Mine use the plastic DMRs. Plenty of grip, no shin strikes that I can remember. Paired with 5-10s.

DMR V6s here as well.  Come in plenty of colours and seem grippy enough for them without the shin mashing capability of the metal pins.

I recommend first checking if they are 1/2" (BMX) or 9/16"(MTB) pedals before buying any new ones.......

When my kids were 6 I don't think they ever had an issue with feet slipping off pedals even with the original plastic cage pedals, but the Specialized pedals that bizarrely came on my lad's Cannondale(!) are moulded like proper flats with moulded pins are very good.

Based on this I went with KC008s, my daughter has been riding with them for a year or so now and never slipped on them. They're a slightly smaller platform than the 001s which suits her better for now (age 7 in size 10 I think)

I have horrible memories of nylon pedals in my childhood, one wet sole and its bye bye shins.

Just received the kc008 from AliExpress. First expressions they look genuine and the same as the other set I have.

Previous experience has shown the pins do come out easily, so loctite them in if you wish. although they are grippy enough without them.

I bought my two boys Race Face Rides, the plastic ones. So far so good. Were about £30 a pair

Both have destroyed multiple kids pedals ever since the 16" wheeled bike. Fingers crossed no more wreckage!
