Any recommendations for some decent brake upgrades for a kids bike - current ones are rubbish and robbing the little lad of confidence.
He is 6 years old so the levers will need to suit small hands.
Will prob need to be v brakes (no disc option!)
cheers
I always found the avid brakes to be good fro Vs but the levers will be the biggest issue as you'll need some suitable for a child.
Might be worth having a look at a local bike shop to see what is on the high end kids bikes and if you can source any of those.
Tektro do junior levers or you can get the Pinnacle/Hoy ones from Evans. As above avid vees are pretty good.
Cheers folks
it is a hoy bike with tektro vees maybe just time to think about some new cables and pads
Pads can make a big difference, some cheap ones are like plastic! Softer ones might wear more quickly but if they work it would be worth it.
Cables need to be in good condition for kids. Good Shimano or Avid Vs are a lot better than the cheap ones.
Setting the lever reach close to the bars will improve grip strength, though you will have to adjust more regularly as the pads wear.
Old Avid levers with the adjustment wound in coupled with the stock tektro V brakes on my daughters bike, they are maybe even verging on being too powerful but fit her hands well and I know that she can definitely stop when necessary... And sometimes when it's not.
