My son has decided he wants a Bmx fir his seventh birthday. Thing is I know nothing about them. What size do I get? He has a 20 inch mtb as a rough guide. Also, I don't want to spend loads as I'm pretty sure he will quickly ditch it. Second hand seems best, but what brands to look out for??
My daughter is nearly 6 and has a 20" isla beinn large and 16" wethepeople seed bmx. She is very tall for her age and I reckon she will get his summer from the bmx before needing the next size up. Decent kids bmx's seem very expensive when you first start looking but some are no compromise mini versions of full size bmx's with high quality miniature versions of proper components. I cant imagine they sell many compared to full size bikes explaining the cost.
The next size up is the 18" which is probably suitable for a 7 year old but again there isn't many available and they are expensive.
Edit: I have added some photos as size guidance

Further to my post above. Have a look on winstanleys bmx. you can filter by wheel size.

Best thing to do is go and try some which is near on impossible due to not many places stocking the smaller sizes due to limited demand.
Depends on what type of BMX you want... It's as fractured as mountain biking!
Race bikes are generally 20", though micro minis are 18", 16" are available but mist kids race on 20". My lad, 8, has an expert size bike, should probably be on a junior mind. At 7 a junior should last a couple of years.
Word of warning it can get expensive quickly! BMX trader UK race bikes is a good source of second hand bikes in fb...
Cheers guys, as I feared it seems that you have to spend a fair to get something half way decent.
Second hand is a good bet, most frames are pretty bomb proof at the kids age.
