something for £100 from Halfords is far away from a Specialized Riprock 20.
Like everything bike related, more money usually means better components, lower weight and higher quality.
A rubbish bike can also make riding a chore, and put the young one off!
A decent, well looked after kids bike will also hold its resale value.
Unless its just for your child to doss about on down the local park, something cheap and cheerful might fit the bill!

My 6 year old has a Kali helmet and he is pretty happy with it. Several kiddy designs available.
Make sure you measure the head circumference on whatever you choose to buy.

Fit is everything. All are certified as safe. Some makes won't fit some heads.
bell sidetrack been good, very adjustable and solid, theres a MIPS version now too
AND thet come in a wide array of patterns/colours
My kids have variously used helmets from Abus (awesome small lids for <5yr olds); specialized, bell and latterly some beautiful MIPS lids from alpine and met. With kids it’s as much the lid they want to wear as much as the one that fits right. Getting into the centre set of that Venn diagram is the tricky bit.
Recently bought my boy a bell helmet. We’re all (me and his older sister) now jealous. Nice quality, really nice clips, and he’s pleased with the dinosaur design he chose.
Edit: just looked it up it’s a bell sidetrack. He’s only 2 years mind, so dunno if the recommendation carries to a 5 year old.
Specialized do some really nice kids and youth helmets. My boy has had two back to back.
