ok I brought the chainreaction Brand x trail frame one for my son and it is great for the 40 quid I paid . I built it up with 24" wheels, discs air forks and he loves it.It was supposed to take a 140mm fork so running a 80mm air fork lowered it a bit more.
Now my daughter needs one, but its 80 quid at the moment and I'm tight as a nats chuff so any other ideas ??
Also would be nice to have one a little different.
So any one seen one or even better have one.
Thanks S

Hi S,

My wee boy is 9 and thinking of doing the same, any chance of a pic or spec list of your first build?

Thanks

Alan

Just be mindful that jump bike frames can look tempting, coming in very small sizes, but they can be a bit long for a child. Spesh etc do good small frames, if u can pick one up. What about a Carrera...they looked good last time I was in 'Frauds.

yeah sure spec is
frame :13" http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=46812

Fork : 2nd hand Manitou Skerab 80mm air fork £50.00 off ebay

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BANKRUPT-24-PAIR-BIKE-CYCLE-ALLOY-DISC-WHEELS-7-8-9sp-/380248593945?pt=UK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR&hash=item5

Tyres : some schwalbe ones http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=48768

Brakes: some avid 5's as they are what I had but they have adjustable lever reach .

Drive train: all standard stuff until i find some shorter cranks and fit a bash ring. Also have sram twist shifters

Short stem fitted, the rest of the stuff is just what I had lying about.

Tell us your email and I will send a pic of him on it. I am not too hot on that pic posting lark.

He is only 9 years old and no more than 54" tall . The seat post sticks out around 4-5"
The jump in confidence is massive, he tackles most things now, up and down, its really nice to see him enjoy it so much. He even looks in control !!!
Any more questions feel free to ask.
Simon

My son has friends with spesh bikes and to be honest they don't work that well.
Forks are pretty poor and I struggle to move them, brakes are ok but not anywhere near the avids . Then the gearing is a little high.
Measured a 24" wheel isla and the jump frame is not a lot longer.

The problem with jump frames is the weight, there really are heavy. I have both a small on one scandal and a small spesh rockhopper frame for my two boys. Both are pretty light and seem a good fit.

The fully built spesh hardrocks really do have poor forks that do not work on 4-5st kids. Go for an old air fork..

I have some pics of my sons on one, but seem to have trouble posting them. I have not tried putting on 24" wheels as my son both had a 24" hotrocks. TBH they grow so quick my youngest has now grown out if that in 1 year... If you have discs I suppose you could run smaller wheels to start with but I found they were ok with the 26" wheels and really liked it.
