Morning guys,
Regularly do Chippenham to Streatley, but thought we'd do it differently this time and do the canal from Chippenham to Newbury. I've ridden a few bits from close to Hungerford to Newbury, but nothing further west.
1. Is it viable ?
2. Anyone got a GPX ?
please 🙂
Bit confused as the Kennet and Avon canal is way south of Chippenham. Are you talking about dropping down to Devises?
From Devises to Newbury it's not a sanctioned cycle route and I usually follow the NCN 4 to passed Kintbury then pick up the canal then. Very quiet lanes a route I enjoy.
If you decide to ride the path it will be super claggy this time of year
Don't mind claggy... I think after looking we've decided to get the train to Bath and start further down, seems to not add any distance, but more off-road than Chippenham and roadying south.
I'e done the Kintbury section before, so know that one 🙂
Thanks for the info though.
The canal is below Melksham at Semington mind if you are doing Bath to Newbury its great done it few times bike and canal boat.If you are thinking about doing it on a weekend it gets very busy with walkers from Avoncliffe to Bradford-on Avon its good from just outside Bristol to Bath as well.
Yeah we get it's likely to have some walking traffic. Just one of them things.
Well the ride had good and bad points.
Bath to Melksham was great, but about 2 miles later the path turned into a mud slog, so we bailed and went to the honey lane cafe on the road.
From there we jumped onto canal path again but it was a mud slog once more, so we roaded it to Pewsey, tried again, still rubbish so we just took cycle route 4 on the road to hungerford where we then shot down the A4 to Halfway and then hit back lanes again to home.
117km on the Parkwood and an excellent test for Gent Wevelgem coming up.
