Up nice and early for a lap of Whinlatter this morning. Parked up and within 5 metres- tiissshhhh. Small hole in the sidewall, sealant struggled with it, probably the location. This happened on the road.

Are the tyres too fragile? Not suitable for tubeless?

Frustrating but I'm glad it wasn't when I had my daughter with me. They've done approx 60 miles, 30% off road roughly.

Tempted to get some Minions ordered.

Not sure whether you should point the finger at the tyres or not (know nothing about them) but sounds like your sealant is more than a bit shite.

Yeah, not overly impressed with that either. First time I've ventured away from Stan's. Back home I've rested it in its side and it looks to be holding air ok, I'll give it a while then take it for a spin up the road.

I can't see how I holed the tyre so quickly.

They are fairly thin, but I ran mine tubeless for a good while without too many issues, apart from big holes.

Switched to Jumbo Jims. Waaay better.

I ran those as they came with the Calibre Dune. It got to the point where I was patching the inside after ever ride, so ditched them for Jumbo Jims. I wouldn't touch them with someone elses barge pole…

Juggernauts are a bit of a shitty tyres.

Slow and made of paper. As a temporary OK, but I'd rather swap them onto something better.

JJ, not sure about. They seems to be plenty bald with random knobs scattered all around the casing...

I would personally go for Aunt Edna from Surly. Looks to me like Nate after hard session in the gym 😀

And Nate is my favorite one.

Cheers!
I.

Surly tyres are ££££!

A pair of Minions is looking like £100ish, which is more than I wanted to spend on the Dune right now but then I don't want to head out with tyres that can let me down so easily...

A pair of Jumbo Jim's can be had for £100 too- what's the better all round tyre?

JJ 4.8 is a pretty good allround tyre- way better in mud than the 4.0 for some reason, still fast, tough enough for most riding (mine have been up and down the golfy and innerleithen offpistes and that). Dry weather really but can cope with some wet. Minion 4.8 is much grippier and actually good in the mud but also, a fair bit slower. Both really good tbh.

I've never used the juggernaut pro at all personally but, they weigh very little for a big tyre.

Which are tougher tyre? I'm based in the Lakes, so rocky trails are a given.

I had a pair of juggernauts, they were awful, tried to give them away but no one wanted them, they ended up in the bin

Right the Juggernauts will have to go then.

It appears the Minions I spotted aren't TR exo.

Any suggestions for a wide, not paper thin pair of tyres for <£100?

Yes Juggernauts very thin so I put lots of Stan's sealant in the tubes they came with. Maybe try that while you look for better fats. I ran them for a year until they died but wished I swapped earlier. Noticeably draggy and poor grip compared to replacements:
Specialized fast track fat and then jumbo Jim. All 4.0 size.

The sealant has done it's job and the tyre is holding air again. Lost faith in them though.

I'm convinced if I run tubes it'll end with multiple punchers, so I've bit the bullet and have some 4.8 Minions on order. I've chucked various Maxxis EXO tyres over some pointy rocks for a while now so have done trust in them.

First ride out on the Minions, way better and more confidence in them. Yeah, a fair bit heavier but once they're up to speed they bulldoze their way through.

To quote Boris "the Blade" Yurinov: "Heavy is good, heavy is reliable. If it doesn't work … you can always hit them with it."
