First ride today and super impressed BUT at the end of the ride it was gritty and not plush. Stripped and regreased as per instructions. How can i keep it running smoothly? Anyone recommend a decent grease? Will a chainstay protector help?

Could fit a bit of DH spec inner tube as a boot to keep the crap out...

Second the fitting inner tube. DH tube will be a bit big, i used an XC one (rated 2.3 on the tube possibly??) which fits like a glove (needs a bit of lube to fit on, cable tie at the top.

I agree, makes my crap descending skills vaguely passable - i like it so far.

Have used a tube from day one and no problems, i even knocked up a home made remote lever for a fiver after seeing how expensive the crank bros ones were.

1) return it to the shop
2) Buy a gravity dropper
3) There is no 3

Not entirely helpful I suppose but if it's giving you gyp after one ride it's more trouble than it's worth to try and make a brand new product work like you've paid for it to do.

my Joplin needs a lot of TLC.
i now use a chainstay protector cut-down when I bother to actually use it.

I've had a PureRace i900 for a few months & it lasted a couple of winter rides before seizing solid. Even after a single ride, I could see water spewing out of the "seals" (does it even have any?). We've had decent seals on forks for years so there's really no excuse for crap like this, especially considering how much some of these adjustable posts cost.

This is why I got shot of mine. The only way to keep it running smoothly was run with a rear mud guard.

these were crap when they were maverick speedballs, crank bros knew about all the issues and fixed not one

they did make the collar a nice colour though

re-arrange these words into a well known sentance or phrase
form, function, over

and yes, gravity droppers are much better

2 friends I know had similar issues- great when the joplin was working..which was very rarely unfortunately 🙁

Just about to do first ride on Spesh Command seatpost tomorrow so will keep you posted on reliability issues, although first impressions are that the quality is really good- none of that strange side to side waggling. I have already fitted an inner tube over it as a precaution tho'

I have stripped and re-greased - now works as new. I have fitted a 2.3 tube over the "stanchion" (clamp down to red collar) this is secured at the top with a zip tie 🙂

Only problem was that it caused a vacuum in the inner tube so i have pierced 2 small holes to allow air in/out and hopefully not water/muck in 🙂

Aargh. First ride out on mine today, and its broken. I put it down, stand up and it just floows me. I had to use a load of cable ties to hold it down in the end. The play is really bad as well. I was riding 90% of the time with my seat down... It's not really what i was expecting... So, should I;
a - strip it and service it, put on an innertube and persevere.

b - send it back to chain reaction cycles and ask for a refund?

Cheers

Andy

CRC got a job lot of 2008/9 Joplin 3's for peanuts hence why they are punting them for £100 because nobody else would. Buy a Joplin 4 and save alot of pain and suffering.

what is the difference with the 4?

I forgot, after it started automatically coming back up, I rode back to the van with it at not full hieght, and halfway there it just strated sinking, so it wouldnt stay at either. I'm not happy, but the idea is brilliant so i want a decent one now... Are the gravity droppers alot more reliable then?

What the hell do you lot do with your Joplins. I've got a 2009 model and it's still running fine since I bought it eight months ago. One half hearted cleaning effort when it got a bit sticky four months after I bought it and no other maintenance.

I do use a rear crud guard, maybe that's the answer. Not using a crud guard, as someone else said above, form over function?

stumpy, if i used a mud guard, I'd be buying a new one every ride... They dont like crashes in my experience...

Just spray some silicon grease inside the tube you've fitted over it Rob. It'll be fine.

Got a Joplin with my Meta 6 frame and used it for one ride then swapped it for an Ibeam. Good idea very very poorly executed, if I had bought it separately then I wouldn't be happy! Can the new seals on the Joplin 4 be fitted to the 3?

Chunkymtb - why silicone grease out of interest? Not got any!!

Got some lithium grease tho, or would just silicone spray (a la fork juice ) work?

Gravity Dropper is mechanical, not hydraulic. This makes it clunky but reliable - e.g once the post is in position, it can't slip. It also comes supplied with a rubber boot to help keep out the crap. About the worst you can say about it is that it looks pants.

Racing_ralph - didn't you have a GD? How many problems did you have with it?
