Not a stealth ad in any way, just gauging opinions.

I made it for my youngest several years ago and has been loved by both of them, got them interested in bikes. Both girls have outgrown it and have new bikes on the way for birthdays.
All I can see happening is that it will sit in the shed, going dusty/scratched etc until (maybe) my girls have kids in many years time..
What would you do? Space in the shed is limited.
If I was to sell it I don't even know if it would be worth much..
Balance bike

Find a way to keep it for your potential grandkids.

Tough one! Would be a real shame to see it sitting going to waste, but no idea how you'd put a value on it.

Will be watching with interest though as I'll be needing to get hold of a balance bike by the summer

Keep going back and looking at the photo as it's bloody brilliant!

See if there's a local kids charity place you give it to. Maybe one that helps disabled or poorly kids.

Too much love went into making that (I remember the threads) and the satisfaction of seeing it being used must have been brilliant. That deserves to stay and get bolted to the wall somewhere - a talking point on the ceiling in the downstairs bog maybe.

Depends how much you like looking at it.

Do you look at it and think"That's bob-on, that. So chuffed with how it turned out" or "I wish I'd done xyz instead on that particular bit?

If you carry on making bikes for your kids, will be be a nice series of works to display as a collection? Would you ever actually display them? If not, is looking at a picture of it pretty much just as useful as looking at the thing itself?

What about your girls? Do/did they love it? It would be pretty cool if it was available for their kids. If you've got the space (and it's not much), that would probably be enough to want to hang onto it.

And if you did chuck it, imagine the unnecessary extra work when one of your girls say: "dad, you know you made me that amazing bike? Do you think you'd like to make one for little miss/mr steviedIII?"

Awesome, I remember the threads..

How do your kids feel about you getting rid of it? Are they attached or is it now "just another thing"?

I'd be more tempted to sell if they have no attachment, market them at a slightly higher price than you'd probably normally ask.. see how it goes from there.

I say definitely keep it. Wrap it up and store it somewhere if you don't want to display it.

Loan it out to friends with kids for a charitable fee, so it always comes back to you.

They are indeed Edd 🙂

Right, I've stripped it down to the frame/forks & stem so that has reduced the size a fair bit. Will look at a way of either storing or displaying (in the shed) and can put the rest of the bits (wheels etc) up in the loft out of the way.

It's right to keep it, I loved making it and the girls have loved riding it..daft idea to even think of selling really..

I passed down or sold all of the kids smaller bikes. The really small ones were ridden by many children and it was always a joy to see them being used.

You don’t need the bike to remember the rides.

With things like that I'd say give it to friends/family on 'extended loan', ie: they can have it for free and use it, but on the understanding that when they're done with it it comes back to you, or is passed on to another friend family member with your agreement.

I've done it with several old frames with sentimental value, I don't realistically ever expect to use them again myself but I've given them to kids of friends to help get them into biking, the only rules I give them are:

1> if you break it in the course of riding it you owe me a chocolate bar
2> when you're done with it you cannot sell it but can either give it back to me, or give it to another friend as long as they agree to the same rules.

Seeing them used and ridden is much better than seeing them on a wall, the memories of your kids will always be there, but you can also enjoy seeing others build new memories.

In bits its just stuff and like you OP, Ive built lots of things over the years that had a purpose at the time.

Depends how much you like holding on to stuff really. Nostalgia is one of the more complex and personal emotions.

Alternatively, and there is always an alternative, you could just let it go and look forwards to the next..

As others have said loan it out and compile an album of all the kids who have begun their love affair with bikes thanks to your creation.

My Dad made me a rocking horse when I was four. My younger brother just sent me a photo of his grandson on it. And his granddaughters still play with the dolls house Dad made for my sister. 3 generations of use.

Does anyone else only see a grey 'no entry' symbol instead of the photo in the OP?

I'm seeing a beautiful first kids bike.

I don’t even get that, sounds interesting would like to see it. I’m looking on an iPhone if that makes any difference

Apparently the grey symbol instead of the photo is a Google thing, possibly permissions, but I don't know why it's affecting some people not all. I'm logged in to my Google account and only see the symbol (Firefox on a PC).

Just checked on Chrome - I see a small square and the words 'Balance bike' but no picture.

Don’t ever sell it.
Hang it over the shed door, or over the mantle piece in the front room.
Don’t sell it.

That is excellent, I'd struggle to part with it myself, unless for a good cause.
Linky, For those that can't see it
(I still can't see it on any of the post and am logged into my google account)
