Anyone used both?

Trying Kamoot for the first time (been using ride with gps for years)

Is there any way in Kamoot to plot a route like you do in ride with gps by clicking on a start point then just keep clicking on the map marking out the route you want to take?

As far as i can make out in Kamoot i have to make a start and end point then click on where i want the route to go and everytime a box pops up saying include on route which i then have to click on

Also if i click on the map and then click again say 10 miles away it dosent route me that 10 miles on the road, instead it shows the route as the crow flies which is no good

Is there something im doing wrong?

I've used RideWithGPS quite a lot for planning routes, I've found it relatively easy to use and now pay for the basic subscription, mainly so I can re-plot middle sections of routes and use the "Undo" button! It does make some funny routing choices every now and then, perhaps because odd sections of map that look route-able have a glitch that prevents the algorithm routing through them. Switching between auto-routing for cycling, driving, and drawing straight lines usually bypasses this.

I haven't used Komoot's routing function much, it doesn't seem quite as click-and-select intuitive but if yours is routing as the crow flies then you may need to select a different option as your "sport" for routing, in the top-left corner of the screen.

On the whole, Komoot seems to be a prettier, i.e. more decorative, interface, whereas I quite like RwGPS' relatively basic functional interface - but that may be just what I've got used to.

Having tried both (and a good few others) I've settled on Komoot. I find route planning pretty easy, it syncs invisibly with my Garmin and they update the mapping frequently so I know that any edits I make in OSM appear in Komoot within 10 days (often less).

Yes,  click and it will give you the option of e new end point, click again and creates a new end point again and so on.

You can also drag that end point further along the route you want to take.  If it deviates you can drag the route line to where you want it (within reason). I only use my laptop to plan a route but ride the route on my mobile.

I pinched a friends route from Strava and modified the start and end to better suit me. Small amount of road, mostly off road and towpath.  Worked perfectly.

Along with that box popping up everytime i click on the map the only other issue i have is as far as i can see there is no pegman i can drop on the map to enter streetview to check out junctions etc...

Does Kamoot support street view?

I understand the point of Komoot is to let it make a route for you. Give it your requirements, start and finish points distance and fitness and so on, and it creates one. You can use it like ridewithGPS, but aren't you missing out on it's (sorry) USP?

There are some features in Kamoot that Ridewithgps dosent have which i like hence trying it out

for example in ridewithgps if you accidentlaly plot a route that goes off road it will show you this on the left of the screen but to see where on the map this is so you can correct it you have to zoom in on the map and look for the area, in Kamoot you just click where its says the route goes off road and it takes you to that section on the map

99% of my rotues start and end at the same point so in Kamoot if i select round trip it brings me back on the same route rather than taking me on a loop back to the end of my ride (as far as i can work out)

What if you're fussy about the type of roads / trails you like riding on?

No two people like the same thing.

We have endless arguments about this with road rides - I like super twisty back country B lanes, others fine them really annoying and prefer more regular roads.....

Yeah, I started using it, and it made some pretty dull MTB routes fo'shure. It's kinda OK for backroads-roadie sort of rides though

I use the Free Versions of both and flip back and forth depending on my needs at the time.

I prefer that RwGPS allows you to switch to different map types as you please whereas the free version of Komoot only has one map type (which, annoyingly, does not include contours).

But the free version of RwGPS does not allow route planning on mobile unless you subscribe (it's free on the web version though).

As noted above, RwGPS does make some very odd choices of routes though, so either you check carefully and correct or you'll end up riding a lot of out and back sections for no real reason (I think their algorithm needs improving or there's a software bug as it's really random sometimes).

I like Komoot but especially that it syncs directly with my Garmin (1000) via the IQ app.  If I'm out somewhere and need to redirect I can set the route using my phone which has a nice UI and then pick up the route on my Garmin.  But, I recognise the issue and sometime I use RideWGPS.  They both seem to use the OpenStreetMap info and sometimes it is pants.  It is worth learning how to update OpenStreetMap for when it is wrong.   The usual problem (for me) is junctions between paths not being marked correctly so it can't reroute correctly

This can also be done using RidewithGPS as i found out today, link ridewithgps to garmin connect on the ride with gps desktop site, then any rides you map on your phone or p.c you just click on the pin icon once the route is complete and it sends it to garmin connect then the next time your garmin device syncs to garmin connect the route is uploaded to your device

Yep, that's worth re-stating. Strava also has an Connect IQ app for syncing routes with your Garmin so Komoot doesn't have a particular advantage over the competition...

Sweet, need to give that a try.  Some of this stuff is starting to work.  It's a shame the Garmin native stuff sucks so badly

FWIW my Komoot and Garmin accounts are linked so that routes created on the former appear automatically as Courses in the latter and then on my Garmin Edge 530/Fenix 6 as soon as I sync them with Connect. No IQ app necessary. I didnt know RwGPS also does this though.

Huh, I didn't know it was possible to link Komoot and Garmin accounts but I guess that's better if your device can't install Connect IQ apps.
Personally, I think auto-syncing has gone too far now as it's a pain in the arse scrolling through sooooo many routes trying to find the right one on my 530. Doesn't help if you don't give your routes a meaningful name either. Doh!
