You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Hi all, just doing the rounds signing up on some forums after taking the step from a hardtail to a full sus. Bought it last week and it arrived on Friday. Built it up (well put the front wheel on) and have taken it out for a quick ride but it needs a bit of a tweak on suspension settings (fronts diving a bit too much under braking but apart from that I love it!!!!!)
Anyway, a few pics. I gather there isn't much love for fives on here lol but I have always liked oranges and always wanted one.
Enjoy.
Oh and I want to shorten the seat cable but it's hydraulic and would need bleeding etc so it can wait
What's that cyber penguin doing in the door?
Nice. Wondering how many filing cabinets had to be sacrificed in order to make that bike 😉
Nice colour.
What's that cyber penguin doing in the door?
watching you 😯
Shiny, I'm guessing the pics were taken before the ride? 🙂 looking good though
What's that cyber penguin doing in the door?
Actual massive lol
You cut the grass, bike is clean, logos and valves lined up, pffffftttt, we don't want your type round here!
Not a fan of them but it is very nice.
White rims though. Not my cup o' tea.

But his house slopes down to the right quite dramatically apparently. 🙂
Wow!
An Orange 5.
Imagine that.
😐
Looks like Pingu to me.
welcome 🙂 oh and that's a nice ride man 😉
Wow, what a welcoming bunch of replies lol
Looks well nice (apart from the long remote cable) 😀
lol, i know the cable is a bit annoying, but theres no way i am going to start cutting it down and rebleeding it in the first week so it will keep!
Very nice! Welcome!
You will climb like a mountain goat believe me!
Mines white 😉 & is nicerer than yours, nurr.
Nice ride!
tidy, welcomme
i always wanted to like them but never did, now it seems its cool not to like them so im ok. tbf tho, thats the best colour choice ive seen. and ive seen every single colour 10 million times each. 🙂
Lol yeah I have never known so many haters in one place but I dont mind. the more people that dislike them the less chance of seeing one the same ha ha. Ps I have no idea what the penguin is!!! Spooky
Best bike going no matter what the Orange haters say

YAWN!
It's not so much people hating Orange, it's more people like flow here who constantly bang on about how the Orange 5 is the best bike in the world, and if you don't own one then you automatically aspire to one, and if not its cos you've convinced yourself it must be crap out of some backwards resentment of the brand or something. I actually like the Orange brand, but people like flow, banging on constantly, like the top sales rep in the company whose new car has got 19" alloys where yours has only got 18" (therefore he must have a bigger cock than you of course), do the brand more harm than good cos the rest of us start to not want to be associated with people like that!
Look, it's a bike, people have different tastes. Some people love their Orange 5's (and there are tonnes of them, and lots of them hang around on this forum, and are almost as vocal as your man flow here), some people are indifferent to them (me, it's a bike, ride it and enjoy!) and some people hate them (normally cos they're so common now you're guaranteed to bump into 5 on any ride you go on). Personally it's whatever floats your boat, and that's great, they're not my cup of tea for various reasons, but FOR GOD'S SAKE flow shut up about this "best bike" every time someone posts about an Orange 5. If it was the best bike going, everyone would ride one! "Best" is subjective, and this is the point, my "best" is something totally different to yours, and it's variety that makes our sport what it is to some extent.
It's all a matter of taste...
Anyway, welcome to the OP... You'll find it fun around here. And just for the record, got to say I like the colour scheme on yours, I've seen literally dozens of Orange 5's in the last week or so, and none of them looked in any way as nice or subtle as yours. Most of them seem to come in one or another neon colours these days which I find hideous myself, maybe it appeals to the average Orange 5 owner (flow)? 😉
Nice bike! I like those DC's too.
How come you've got the Easton carbon bars and I can't find any for sale, Orange definitely stole them all. Not fair. 😡
Nice bike. Nice pictures too.
SB
I like it - mine is a week old now so not quite so shiny. Went to Hamsterley on sunday with it - only saw about 10 other riders - 5 of them on Fives though 😀
Yeah bars came as part of the performance 2 pack which included bars, Thompson stem, reverb post and xm saddle. I got v2 brakes as an option too, and upgraded to the rlc shock. My logic being get everything I want up front and then I don't need to spend anymore money on it for a while.
Glad some people like the colour scheme, personally I love the White wheels, but I know that's a personal thing. But yes, I nearly went for superturf green but I have always loved blue things so it made sense.
And mboy, it's ok everyone has an opinion. I know what you mean about best bike ever posts, I don't think the five is "the best" but for what I wanted and the money I had it was for me. I looked at Lapierre zesty /spicy and trek but settled on this. Was I right? Who knows. Am I happy! Damn right lol. Now off to work to try and get everything done so I can leave on time on Wednesday to get to Cannock. Damn living in the midlands lol
Ps I have bought some five ten White tigers but those blue ones are nice. Having said I am now not spending money I do need (want) some podium pedals!
I like oranges, and I think you picked the best colour as well.
As stratobiker says, nice pictures. Very thoughtfully taken.
I saw a photo of you on here the other day mboy, you've got a big mouth for such a scrawny runt.
The dude signed up and posted potos of his new bike and because it's a Five people made retarded comments. If it's ok for them to do that (which is ****ing rude) then it's ok for me to give my opinion, and I couldn't give a shit whether you like it or not.
Keep your keyboard warrior opinions of me to yourself, I doubt you would say it to my face.
I really like the fives, I considered one recently but I was very shocked at the price when compared to similar bikes. Not a criticism, more an observation.
I like em but don't think they are £600 better than a Heckler.
They're not, they are £366 better though 😉
Welcome to the forum mbarnes! 🙂
Good start; already an argument on your first thread! Nice one!
I saw a photo of you on here the other day mboy, you've got a big mouth for such a scrawny runt.
I've seen Mboy in real life and he's not actually scrawny at all.
In fact, I think he would beat you in a fight. He'd give you a Chinese Burn and you'd run away crying to your mummy. 😉
LOL @ flow, you make my day you do... I only need to remind myself that I'm not you and it brings a big smile to my face! 😆
I saw a photo of you on here the other day mboy, you've got a big mouth for such a scrawny runt.
How old are you? 10 years old per chance? Schoolground mentality of "you don't agree with what I say so I'm gonna duff you up" is it... Most people beyond pre-pubescense (ie. the vast majority of this forum) tend to go with reasoned arguments and substantiated facts for what it's worth, generally they're more useful in an argument!
The dude signed up and posted potos of his new bike and because it's a Five people made retarded comments
Did they? Where? Show me... I've scrolled back up, and there was nothing negative written...
If it's ok for them to do that (which is **** rude) then it's ok for me to give my opinion, and I couldn't give a shit whether you like it or not.
Hey, post your bike up on an internet forum, people aren't likely to hold back on their thoughts. My Maverick has been called everything from "gopping" to "god awful" by some people, others (including me) love it though. Personally I don't care, I like how it rides and I happen to quite like how it looks, I don't expect everyone else to feel the same though and honest opinions are always valid.
Keep your keyboard warrior opinions of me to yourself, I doubt you would say it to my face.
Really? I'm not the one angling for a position on the payroll at Orange, sat sniping every internet forum thread from someone looking for a 140mm travel bike, telling them how crap everything except and Orange 5 is! No hidden agenda here... I just got fed up with your constant spouting of crap, and voiced my opinion. I see on other threads today you've been your usual reserved self too, and managed to elicit responses from several others to stop talking crap! And I don't know who you are, or where you're from, but if you're trying to make me feel intimidated in any way shape or form, you're picking a fight with someone who quite frankly doesn't give a monkey's mate! You could be Mike Tyson for all I care, I'd still say it all to your face...
I've seen Mboy in real life and he's not actually scrawny at all.
LOL @ Elf... Cheers for the support mate, though I may be about 3 stone heavier than you I'd still not call myself beefy in any way shape or form! 😉
Sorry to the OP by the way, see what I mean about it being fun around here though... And enjoy riding your bike, as at the end of the day, that's the whole point of it isn't it, no matter what the make, model and colour of it are.
Welcome but please dont bang on about Orange 5's.
I'm with you mboy, I can't stand the sight of them. The orange 5 is the ford escort of the biking world, common as you know what.... ??????
Lol don't worry I won't be "banging on". I have said hi, shown some pics. That will pretty much do until I have some questions.
Ps ordered my podium point ones today and my leading edge tape arrived so I can wrap my bike up and stop it getting chipped (awaits more comments about how a bike should look worn and battered :p )
Nice tyre logo/valve alignment and matching dust caps too.Mrs mbarnes must be very proud
Haha someone else mentioned that and I didn't know what they were on about just twitted that the logos are dead centre! Orange built the bike lol not me. I hadn't even noticed.
Nice colour had a 06 five resprayed in a similar shade , White rims very nice too
Nice bike, now get some riding pics up 😀

Don't pay any attention to the buzzkills on here - it's your bike, so you do whatever you want to it. I'm personally not a fan of how 5s look, but actually think yours is pretty nice. The main thing is that you like it, which you obviously do, and that you enjoy riding it, which I'm sure you will. 😉
Funny, given what has been said above, but where i am I don't see many Oranges. Here it seems to be Specialized by quite a margin.
Always assumed it would be the same everywhere but clearly not.
Just learn to ride it as well as the lad I had the privelidge (sp) to ride with in Molini Italy, who on a bog standard Five out rode pretty much everyone there!
Oh dear.....
It's not bin well, clearly. 🙁
I think he's coming on to you mbarnes
G.R.F do you have a picture? You sound feisty, I like that 😉
OP,it's good bike,go out and ride it and enjoy yourself,if you're going to hang around on here, don't believe anything we post, the in jokes go back years, aand aren't aimed at you personally.
P.S. G.R.F. lives with his boyfriend ,a social worker,in Hebden bridge,and it's a very committed relationship..

I always thought that Hebden Bridge was a hotbed of girl on girl scissor sister action ??

The Ford What, grandad?
Stopped making those last century didn't they? 😉
I've located a man on facebook called Mr Agent..
I wonder if he owns an Orange? 🙂
Nice looking bike 😀
Lol nah I don't mind the banter. Not everyone can have the good sense to buy the best bike ever ever ever made. :p
the vast majority of this forum) tend to go with reasoned arguments and substantiated facts
massive LOLz 😆
Just a little update, had the bike a month now and love it still!! Done follow the dog several times now but desperate to get further a field. Did a beginners skills day up in Yorkshire which was brilliant, I am sure it will be well below everyone on here but it was great for me to actually have someone show me, talk me through and then feedback on my technique. Did climbs, descents, step ups, corners, ride position etc etc etc.
Have bought a few things for it, new podium point one pedals arrive next week and my gamut dual ring arrived last night.
All in all still very very happy!!!
Me early in the day still not bending my arms enough! That's my downfall constantly! Years of bad habits to try and get rid of
Nice camera, shame about the arse bike ;p
Orange 5 rider on flat trail with colour coordinated bike and clothes. Reinforcing the stereotype? 🙂
nice bike btw
Not a 5 fan, but it's nice colour. And all the Hope stuff is lovely.
I'd consider swapping that rear mech for the shorter caged version (GS instead of SGS), the long cage looks a bit gopping with the chain guide and you don't need the long length running 2 chainrings.
Yeah was looking at the shadow mechs last night. May get one
And as for the flat trail sorry, it was a beginners course what can I say
Yeah was looking at the shadow mechs last night. May get one
Shadow or non-shadow has nothing to do with the cage length and I'm sure the one on there would already be a shadow mech.
I know that trail, and whilst it is flat in that particular (short) section, it's about to get steep and interesting!
Nice bike BTW, not fussed about 5's either way although my mate has one and loves it. One day i'm going to find someone with a diddy version i can try so i can find out if all the fuss is justified!
Bloody expensive though, glad my Wolf Ridge came with £1000 off list price 🙂
Muddy, it's up in yorkshire, we did a route from near Hebdon bridge? There was a great rock paving section and then a pretty steep descent to the car park. Was a great day.
And yeah, I meant I have been looking at the short cage shadow mechs, not just shadow in general. There are so many model numbers I gave up though lol. And when it's ten speed the choice seems more limited. If anyone can advise the best one I would be grateful.
Price wise yeh they have a bit of a premium but they also offered a lot of options up front which meant less spent on buying bits later and trying to sell second hand parts off it. Bars and stem and seat post etc. Plus I got two pay rises and a bonus within 4 months so figured I deserved it hah
Double post
That route is part of a ride i do from Rochdale. Up behind Watergrove Reservoir to Limers Gate, down into Portsmouth above Todmorden, Climb the valley side ando over to the wind farm on the Long Causeway, along the road to the start of the BW/singletrack that ends at Todmorden Golf Club. From the Golf Club, turn right along the road til the BW/singletrack that you are pictured on then down that lovely, increasingly steep and fun trail down to the car park under the viaduct.
Then a pootle home on the canal 🙂
About 35 mile in total i reckon, nice ride out.
it takes all sorts and I like the colour of your bike and also don't mind the white rims
is this some sort of dogging code..?
a "Barnes", on an argument thread 😯
eeeeh, it was all arguments round here when I was a lad
If your bike is 10spd already, and you want to stick a shorter cage mech on, you've only got 2 choices currently other than swapping shifters too and going with SRAM. Either you need the 10spd specific XT medium cage rear mech, or the 10spd specific medium cage XTR rear mech. They don't do a shorter cage length on SLX or lower just yet. And currently medium cage is the shortest length for an MTB derailleur in 10spd from Shimano.
If you're still on 9spd, well you've got loads of choice... XTR/XT/SLX/Saint all available with shorter cage mechs for 9spd compatible systems.
Glad to see it being ridden and you're enjoying it.
very nice bike indeed!
Yeah we did the bit past the golf course and finished with the really steep track to the viaduct. Something I would have papped myself over at the start of the day I got down with hardly any braking at the end. Loved it
they're roadies pretending to be ATB riders
ATB? is it 1994 again or did you buy your bike from Tesco?
Would this work? What does the m985 part mean? Isn't 985 the race stuff not trail stiff or does that just apply to cranks etc? Would this be ok with slx shifters?
m985 means you've 985 times more money than sense if you bought that over SLX or XT.
