I'm not in the area generally as an exiled Devonian now but some stuff I know of...

Trail centre - Haldon. The official stuff is a bit "meh". Not bad, but the red is just over too quick, the "black" is a joke, and the blue is more of a family trail (though if you can get a run of it when no families are on it, it's a fast blast). There's some nice off piste though off the cafe side that makes it more worth a trip.

DH - Gawton near Tavistock. Not been but from everything I've seen it looks proper serious stuff. Uplift too.

There's Woodbury Common over by Exmouth. Need to explore, have a guide or look up routes but a fair bit around there. MoD land so watch out for the marines and keep out of their way.

There's Keypitts/North Devon Trails, not too sure what kind of stuff. Pay to ride I believe.

Cann Woods is a local Plymouth spot. There's Plymbridge trails as a recent build also but I believe it's little more than a family trail and it keeps getting sabotaged by nimbys.

Quantocks is less than 2 hours away - a full day there will get you round the best bits (beautiful natural single track descents), but I keep finding new stuff every time I go - tougher downhill stuff there too at triscombe.

The best bits of Dartmoor start from Bovey Tracey, recruit a local to show you Lustleigh Cleve etc, some great stuff. Si from here is a great base of knowledge, but i think he's now in Scotland, see if you can find Trail Monkey or Slugwash on here.

I was living at Bovey Tracey until a coupla years ago.. You have some of the best bridleway riding in the UK on your doorstep, and I'm sure that a local or two will pop up on this thread to offer to show you the best bits..

Ordinance Survey map OL28 can give you a great start, try Lustleigh Cleave to the NW of Bovey for steep technical challenges 🙂

I can possibly get out that way for a daylight ride on a Monday, Tuesday or some Wednesdays

(Trailmonkey's sold his blimmin mountain bike last I heard, fully converted to the cult of lycra 🙁 )

I'll probably be going out for a "near-midnight-stroll" either tonight or tomorrow (if tomorrow it may be a bit earlier than very late night). I live in Paignton, but it's not far. Let me know if you're insomniac 😉

regular sunday rides 11 @ the hub haldon. park at the ley arms in kenn and ride up. wednesday evenings they leave the ley at 6.30 to meet at the top of cycle path next to a38 flyover for 7.
you're welcome on either. a few of those involved are also involved with the trail work so we know our way around pretty well.
otherwise you've picked very good location, perfectly situated for the best riding dartmoor has to offer. conditions are reportedly very good at the mo.

Am Plymouth based but happy to guide around here if your still at a loose end, Stephen (at) Hodgemail dot co dot uk

Otherwise hook up with Carl he's the man in the know, or there's a club ride at Croypool BNQ Plymouth 6pm on Tuesday or Saturdays at 9 IIRC.

Bovey = Lustleigh Cleave = best ridin' evva

I quite like Haldon too, as a 2/3 times a year visitor, it's an easy mind-off post work blast - I like the extended blue with lights on in the dark, it's got a lovely flow to it, prefer it to the red which has the odd section that just seems to be there to justify rear suspension (which I don't have, and that with shocking line choice isn't a good combo)

Although I only live in Saltash, I don't ride on Dartmoor nearly enough. I'd be well up for some local guidance out of Bovey. Any takers?

Jason,

Any ideas on route for Friday or are you just playing around lustleigh?

Was thinking about stretching the legs your way but would rather do some miles than just pushing up the a muddy track in the cleave.

Cheers

Jay loves to get the miles in so he'll be well up for a proper Dartmoor ride. Due to various circumstances, we've only had him around Cann a few times since he's moved to Bovey. He'll be really grateful if you can show him around, Harry.

I'd love to join you, but my post-op leg is still quite painful, so gonna rest it 'til Monday.

Okies, will check on work commitments but should be okies, if not I will certainly join you all for a ride over Christmas at some point.

Be good to get a Devon Forunites ride sorted.

Harry that sounds awesome. I'm very keen to learn dartmoor as I have never ridden there and it's on my doorstep!!
I drop kids off at 9 and pick them up at 3 tomorrow. Hope that's good for you.
My number is 07548 943817

When I get a smart phone we could maybe set up a riding whatsapp group. A load of us were on one in Luton its works very well with lots of people makes organising rides easy

it's like multiple text messages going out to a group of people, who all get included in the conversation. Like our group emails, but easier to manage.

Jonesy,

Apologies, haven't had time to sort my bike out, so not go for me for the moor tomorrow.

Will be having a quick thrash round Haldon tomorrow, Just on the marked trails as still running summer tyres on the SS if you fancy getting out.

Would definately be up for a Eastern Moors loop at some point over the break.

Last part for it arrived today so pretty much done bar the indexing. And a cautiously long fork steerer in case it rides like a bag of shit and i want a different frame/taller headtube.

I'm in bovey, just getting back into mtbing after a year off. (Nasty accident on road bike). I know a lot of the tracks and trails, more than happy to share!

I try to get to haldon a few times a month as well, the take are OK, and there are some really good unmarked ones.

I'll be up for some rides over Christmas.

Did a few laps of Haldon on the new bike this morning, I'm really out of condition... Christmas rides might be out jonezy, lol. Considering I was riding almost 1000 miles a month before my accident (commuting by bike), how quickly fitness fades!

Hi jonezy400

Sorry for reply being a bit late, one of my mates sent me through the topic feed a while ago and not got around to replying until now. I live in Bovey Tracey and go out most Tuesday nights with a group, which I am sure you would be welcome to join. I could also meet up with you another evening or weekend if you would prefer to show you around the cleave. Let me know and I can send over my number.

I am pretty sure there is another group that goes out on Thursday nights, but don't know much about them I'm afriad. Think the meet in the tourist office car park (opposite the park).

Let me know Jason - 07811368253
