Didn't swear too much. Nothing broke as I did it. No blood was lost. The damn thing even looks round (mainly). My tinkering never usually goes this well. It can only go south now. I'm going to die from a simultaneous spoke implosion related crash amen't I?

So long as they all ting the same and it's not egg shaped or wobbling left to right too much, it'll be fine. Incredibly satisfying, isn't it? Pity it doesn't actually save much money...

Here's hoping would be happy with a few months. Not sure tension feels even all round but hopefully not much in it. Built from a rim and spokes had lying around, and a 2nd hand Shimano hub. For thw winter bike so only big cost been my time. Thursday night test run I think. Will be well chuffed if come home with wheel still looking true.

I just built a wheel too! Second one and looking much better than attempt 1. Re tension, most mtb wheels are dished differently on each side to accomodate rotors and cassettes, so i'm working on the theory that the spokes will be a bit tighter on one side than the other.

@akira: The ting test as above mate. If it all sounds even, it is, just about! 😉

I think it's possible to bed the spokes in by 'sitting' repeatedly around the rim - a bit of changing tension loosens them up a bit - then re-tension. Stops it all going out as soon as you ride on it. Might be talking b*****ks though.

Also heard that linseed oil good as a thread lock.

Good luck, my first attempt seemed OK, took it for a half hour spin round local streets and down a few flights of stairs/drops no probs still round, gave everything a double check/tweak. First "proper" ride all the spokes loosened 😳 possibly not enough tension overall, took it to LBS they sorted it. Second one (and third) I built was fine still going strong 700+ miles later. Got another one to do soon, fingers crossed.
