And it’s a bit rusty..

basically bought an old Raleigh dynatech road bike off eBay for not a lot, best part of 30 years old. Always wanted one as a kid so decided to buy it and restore. The paint is overall ok, but on the crown of the steel fork there is a bit of exposed rust, likewise some bubbling under the paintwork on the steel lugs and a bit of rust on a few gouges on the seat stay (would post pics if I knew how)

presumably the bike is still structurally sound and a bit of rust ok (how to tell?) is it just a case of sanding down the affected parts and respraying?

I’d ideally not want to repaint the entire fork, as it matches the main colours of the frame tubes and doubt I’ll get an exact match, and they are in good nick. So basically want to touch up the fork with as close a match as possible paint wise. Then respray the stays and lugs which are a fairly standard silver colour.

also..19mm tyres!! 😂

19mm! And I thought the 23mm tyres on the bike I use on the turbo looked skinny 😀

But most importantly, where are the photos???

Silver stays and drop outs - are you sure they aren't chrome plated?  I assume steel, and chrome plating there was quite popular BITD on posh road bikes.

It was always the Raleigh Record Sprint when I was growing up.

The bike was probably rubbish as a real road bike, but the black and gold just looked stunning to me at the time.

Much to my dads annoyance as he had and rode some quite fancy bikes that cost a fair bit. I wasn't interested, they were not black and gold 😀

Sounds great. I loved my dynatech. Geometry was amazing for the day and really comfy because of the mishmash of tubes. DO NOT use paint or powder coating that will require heat curing - it knacks the bonding in the lugs. i seem to recall there were issues with the seat stay/ seat tube bonding so some had a different lug made with bolts as well. Don’t be tempted to undo these!

I was lucky enough to work with Derek and Gerald O’donavan on a school project  that I was builing for my a-level CDT. They were on one face of it traditional staid British engineers - like you might see at the rollout of a DeHavelland Comet and at the same time they were running these bleeding edge racing teams, conjuring up new manufacturing techniques, using space age materials (the first ever 3d printed / sintered thing I saw was a prototype crown for the UGLI fork in metal matrix composite, in 1993!) and testing the boundaries of what was acceptable practice. It was an absolute tragedy they were shut down when Raleigh pretty much folded.

Don't sand the rust to begin with, rub it with alu foil and a bit of vinegar instead. A less abrasive way to remove oxidisation.

I had one of those, probably best present I ever got. It was okay for a road bike but pretty low level components and 501 steel but felt fast enough for me at the time.

I always wanted a Hutch Prostar as a kid and don't think I would not spend the 1,000s required to get one now to fulfil that dream.

I had a DynaTech Team back in 91. It had Suntour XC Pro which didn’t index, self energising brakes (Suntour, but Scott Mathauser design) which wanted to kill me and it weighed a ton, but I loved it.

Eh... The early jet age was pretty cutting edge experimental engineering...

I had a Raleigh Record Sprint that my dad gave me, 25.5" (65cm) frame - a proper "gate". Think it was one of the later ones without all the gold components - seem to remember it being old school gearing with a 53/39 chainset and biggest sprocket on the 6 speed cassette being about 23t. Did my first ever century ride on it. Seat tube broke just above the bottom bracket one day whilst climbing a hill - got a rough repair by dad's mate who welded a sleeve around it. It got stolen about a year later, sad times.

I had a black Raleigh Pursuit in that size. At 179cm tall now I think I'm still growing into it.

It’s not the ti version unfortunately, it’s pretty much the bottom of the range alu job. I didnt look for a ti version as A - that was never on my radar as a kid and this is the exact one I wanted, and B- the ti versions were going second hand for about 3 times what I paid for mine (although B influenced my purchase more😂)

pics will be up when I’ve done some restoration, it needs some work and new calipers.

also, what the hell is going on with the hoods and bars on old school road bikes…it’s nothing like anything I’ve ever sat on before!

A buddy had a Dynatech road bike bitd. He was riding it whilst carrying an Orange C16 (I think) frame back from a friend who had welded it back together for him after he broke it doing trials. Rear stays of the mountain bike caught in the rear wheel of the road bike, swung around and snapped the right hand seat stay of the Raleigh. Sad day

i'd file/sand down all the rust until its shiny and see how much metal was left. very easy to go over critical places like brake lugs/crown welds with a tig or mig if youre concerned
does it have the 27.0mm seat post?
