Freewheel failed yesterday leaving me spinning like crazy and going nowhere. I've just taken it to the LBS and he said it'll be £40.

Standard Shimano hub (M545). Have I been royally rodgered or is this reasonable?

EDIT: yep - fitted.

Seems a bit much for a bog-standard shimano freewheel, 30secs on the wiggle website has found an M510 for £22 and an M555 for £25. Not sure of compatibility with yours...
With the cassette off fitting is just one 10mm allen-bolt, undo, change blocks and redo.

Sounds like a lot if it's just the part (given that an entire hub will be £20-odd), but if you need them to fit it too then what choice do you have?

The freehubs on those boggo Shimano hubs are terribly weak, I gave up using them many years ago.

Ask if they have the complete hub in stock.If they do,its likely to cost the same as the body alone. Then pay a little extra for labour (if at all) to get all the guts of a new hub fitted into the old shell.If they say they cant remove the body without it being built or they can,but it will damage the shell then they are telling lies! Deffo the route i`d be going down as its good to replace cones (for free) in this level of hub whenever you get the chance.

With the cassette off its not just a 10mm allen bolt to change the body. Its an axle out job.

If it's only a quote then:
Freehub body @ £24.99
Lockring Tool@ £5.37
Chainwhip @£8.99
Adjustable @ £6.76
Total = £46.11.

It's only a few minutes work to take it all apart, put new grease and put the bearings back in.

Ask if they have the complete hub in stock

This - I've seen the whole hub cheaper several times.

If it's only a quote then:
Freehub body @ £24.99
Lockring Tool@ £5.37
Chainwhip @£8.99
Adjustable @ £6.76
Total = £46.11.

It's only a few minutes work to take it all apart, put new grease and put the bearings back in.

Or for £6.11 less he could get someone else to do it and have it ready to for the weekend.

I'd go for a new hub from CRC (£23.49), strip it down and use the parts, but then I've got all the correct tools 😉

Seems reasonable to me - about £20 for the hub and the same for labour.

You also need a cone spanner and a 10mm allan key, but you can use an old chain instead of a chain whip.

Given whats involved, £40 seems reasonable. I would ask if it includes new bearings.

May be a good time to upgrade to a better wheel?

Perfectly reasonable price, they'll probably be re-greasing and cleaning the bearings while they're at it, its a pig of a job with a well used hub.

As others have said-seems fair enough, though initially seems a chunk of money until you break it down.

What did you anticipate it might cost?

I use those Deore hubs on the commuter. When my rim died i had a replacement in the shed, but 36 hole. Was cheaper to buy a new 36 hole hub than new set of spokes to rebuild.

It would have arrived by Wednesday if ordered by 2pm and is 20minutes worth of work. if you're competent then I'd get he tools and that way you're done. Forgot about cnoe spanner prices though!! 🙄
